MEDITATIONS IN THE PSALMS [An outline of the Psalm, A good devotional study when using the scriptures indicated] Psalm 22, Part 3: Verses 4, 5, 6 A Rule for Encouragement in Times of Trial
âOur fathers trusted in Youâ; the covenant heads, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This is the family rule, âThey trustedâ brought to our attention three times over in these three verses. âAbraham trusted Youâ when he left Mesopotamia, Heb. 11:8-9 âBy faith Abraham, when he was called to go out âŚâ âHe trusted Youâ when he took Isaac to Mt. Mariah, Heb. 11:17-19 âBy faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac âŚâ And what of Moses, Joshua, and the Judges? âThey trusted You and You delivered them.â There is a double emphasis in verse 5; He delivered them redemptively and providentially; âThey cried to You and were deliveredâ as to their persons; âThey trusted in You and were not confoundedâ, their expectation. The Scriptures are a record book of faith; we who are Godâs children have an ancestry of âfaithersâ; and if our fathers trusted and were delivered we should follow their example. âThey trusted in THEEâ: their God was worthy of trust and He proved Himself so, â⌠not one thing has failed of all the Lord your God spokeâ, Jos. 21:44-45; 23:14. The argument, âThou didst deliver themâ but Thou wilt not deliver me: nay, rather âThou didst deliver them because thou wilt not deliver me.â âBut I am a wormâ, a confession of incomprehensiveness; Mr. Spurgeon calls this âA miracle in language.â How could the LORD of glory be brought to such abasement? Lower than the angels is inconceivable, but lower than man? What a contrast âI Am that I Amâ and âI am a worm and no man.â How can it be? Remember where our Substitute is this hour; He is in hell God forsakened, trampled under the foot of wrath. There is no exaltation of flesh in hell! Men may be BIG in this world, but in the world of the damned theyâre only on the level with the lowest creature. What is a worm but the most helpless creature on earth? What kind of worm? Some believe the reference is to the âcochineal insect used in dyeing, purple or scarlet in color which represents Christ in three ways ⌠As covered with the crimson sins of Godâs elect. Isa. 1:18, âCome now ⌠though your sins be as scarlet âŚâ sins imputedâŚ.As scarlet with His own blood Isa.63, âWho is this who comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah...â He will come in triumph and take vengeance: as yielding by His death that blessed dye which removes all our spots and stains. `The âcochinealâ was more valuable in death than in life. It represents those for which He died; men are represented in scripture as worms because of their natural corruption. Here is my hope (Job 17:14; 25:6; Isa. 41:14); Christ became identified with me; âIf I called to corruption, âyou are my fatherâ, and to the worm, âyou are my mother and my sister,â where then is my help.â âFear not you worm Jacob [the Church], You men of Israel [few men]! I will help you,â says the Lord and your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.â ~~Terry Worthan, 1938-2022
