It is of uttermost importance that we understand the certitude there is in the written Word of God, because saving faith and the Scriptures are inseparable. For just so as we must count on the power and fidelity of God so shall we be confident of receiving the things He has promised. In the words of scripture, “now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
The Word of God is the objective foundation, on which our hope rests. Faith is a firm authority and expectation that the Lord God will perform all that He has promised to us in Christ, “And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” Because of this enduring link between the Scriptures and faith we must study the Word regarding its truthfulness. I ask that you remember these words of the Apostle Paul, “[Love] rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth.”
The essential question that we all must ask is, how can we, as unholy sinners, be right before the all Holy God? In the first chapter of Romans, the Apostle Paul says: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."
In these verses, the Word of God clearly tells you and me that we can have a right standing before God credited to us. The righteousness of God from faith to faith, faith beginning and ending, first and last. In trusting on the finished work of Christ Jesus, we have one hundred percent right standing with God credited to us. This is the whole impact of what is said in Romans 3:21 "But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;"
We are told that our right standing with God is declared, and Scripture is clear that we have one hundred percent perfection in Christ because of what He alone has DONE. Not because of works that the church of Rome and it's fallible popes tell you to do.
In verse 22 of the same chapter 3, we are told of "...the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe:.." The righteousness, which is of God and from God and given to us in Christ Jesus, is upon all that believe. We are all sinners and have come short of the glory of God, but the glory and the magnificence of the good news is given to us in verse 24:
"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:"
We are justified freely by God's grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus ALONE. Free is totally free, it is of no cost, a gift and not something we ourselves can earn, it is solely and entirely God's work and it is through the payment and the redemption that Christ Jesus has accomplished. It does not come by works, by "penance" or by catholic sacraments. It is not simply that He delivers us from sin, but He has paid the utmost price! He has been for us the ransom paid when He shed His blood. God's righteousness is credited to us when we believe solely on the finished work of Christ Jesus. By imputation, legally, we are indeed perfect in Christ ALONE! Praise God!!
The Book of Ephesians, chapters 1 and 2, shows us that all spiritual blessings are given in Christ. How is this possible? It is because we are counted with the righteousness of Christ Jesus, that our being right before the all Holy God is because of what Christ Jesus has done and that it is not of any merit on our part, but it is solely what He has done and He gives us one hundred percent perfection as we are cloaked in His righteousness. Why look to anything or anyone else? We have direct access to God through Christ our Saviour!
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
These are the words spoken by Christ Jesus!
Did He tell us we could come to the father through saints? Through our good works? Through Mary? Through a priest? Through sacraments? Through prayers to the dead? NO!
He said "but by me."
Thus in the book of Hebrews we are told to "come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." This is made possible by God's grace and through faith we enter, because in Christ Jesus and in Him ALONE are we accounted as perfect.
My Catholic friends, I ask, that you prayerfully study this whole question of, how we, as unholy sinners, can be right before the all Holy God? Unless you are confident that you are made one hundred percent perfect in Christ alone, with no merit of your own added, you are not truly saved before our all Holy God, because God demands perfection. That perfection will never be found in good works, for there are no works good enough to satisfy the wrath of God against sin, for Christ ALONE is the propitiation!
Let the trumpet sound with Biblical distinctives. On the authority of Scripture let it be known that sinners are justified by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ Jesus alone! And to God alone be the glory!
The clear resounding cry is the command of the Lord Himself, "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."
Dear Catholic friends, with a heavy heart I am pleading with you. Turn away from idols and popish trickery and turn to Christ ALONE!
“Repent ye, and believe the gospel”
~Richard Patrick
