MEDITATIONS IN THE PSALMS [An outline of the Psalm, A good devotional study when using the scriptures indicated] Psalm 18:29-50, Part 6 Gaining the Victory and Confusing the Enemy
Our lives are full of bitter battles, one after another, and there is no better way to face them than in Christ: by faith in the strength and might of God’s arm the victory is gained in His way, and His way is always perfect. David could write this from experience, I can testify to it from experience, “As for God, His way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him” (v30). Perfectly just – perfectly wise – perfectly good – perfectly holy – perfectly honorable to Himself, and perfectly sure to prevail for us: “for by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall” (v29). Observe again, “the word of the Lord is tried”, fire-tried, purified; most-pure, refined; and free from dregs. Never shall it fail, not one promise, nor one iota of its counsel. “Forever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven” (Ps.119:89); “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”; “ a buckler to all those who trust in Him”. “For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God?” (31) The TRUE believer challenges heaven and earth to find another being worthy of honor, blessing, glory, adoration and worship. “Who is God save Jehovah?” Who else creates, sustains, foresees, and overrules? “It is the Almighty that girded me with strength” (32). We need no other girdle; “Almightiness” can protect us in any circumstance. “He maketh my way perfect” (32). How else could it be? Without God there is not anything strong, or holy, or finished, or successful, or perfect. Our enemy is swift, we must be swifter, only through Christ, “He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places” (33). High places is literally “strongholds”; spiritually Christ. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph1:3); “Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool” (Heb.1:13). He said to the Church at Rome, “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet”; confusing the enemy. “He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms” (34). “Everything skillfully done in the arts of peace or war are ascribed to divine teaching”. “Nimrod was a mighty hunter BEFORE the Lord” (Gen.10:9). “Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation: thy right hand hath holden me up, Thy gentleness hath made me great”. What a gift! God’s protection is unfailing. His omnipotence, His unlimited power can make a worm stronger than an angel! How strong is an angel? “And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians” (2 Kings 19:35). Another night an angel appears to shepherds with good news of the condescension of Christ (Luke 2:8-20), fulfilling the promise that none who are upheld by God’s right hand shall fall, our victory is in Him! ~~WTW
