The Fellowship of Believers
I know that most of you are faithful to the Sunday worship services, and you tarry after services to visit and talk with one another. But what about the other six days of the week? Do you have much fellowship with those whose conversation is seasoned with grace and who are a good influence on you and your children? The people of the world (religious world and social world) ARE NOT an influence for good or spiritual growth. "Evil companions and associations corrupt good character" (I Cor. 15:33). But our brethren comfort us, encourage us, instruct us, and regular fellowship with them and their families will be a great blessing to you and your children. Do not spend your social and family time with these who do not know God (86% of the week) and expect to correct the effect with a couple of hours on Sunday. As much time as you can devote to good fellowship in Christ with other believers will reap great blessings to you and your family. -- Henry Mahan
Overcoming The World . . .
- To have no interest in the wisdom or philosophy of this world.
- To have no interest in the approval or recognition of this world.
- To have no anxious care about the materialism and prosperity of this world.
- To have no interest in the glory or fame of this world.
- To be conscious of the fact, that, every relationship in this world will end.
- To have no interest in, but only disdain for the religions of this world.
- To believe God’s Word only and to believe Christ only in spite of all in the world, for . . .
. . . “This is the victory that overcometh world, even our FAITH” – I John 5:4
“And we know that we are of God and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”– 1 John 5:19
Every child of God knows, yet needs to fully know these two things: firstly, that ‘we are of God,’ born of God, loved of God, redeemed by God, called of God, sons of God . . . that of God are we in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us, wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.” Secondly, every child of God knows that ‘the whole world lieth in wickedness.’ This world is a wicked and perishing place to the child of God whose eyes have been opened by the word of God.
The ark of Noah had only one window. Noah and family, upon looking out that window, saw the world as it truly is . . . wicked, under the wrath of God, and perishing. That window is God’s Word, Christ, the Light of the world, Who referred to this world as ‘this present evil world.’ And scripture says that Noah, upon building the ark; ‘condemned the world.’ Every child of God sees clearly that this is a wicked world, in captivity to the god of this world, and lieth in the wickedness of all manner of evil and idolatry. Scripture says: ‘All that is in this world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof..” (1 Jn.3:16-17). Therefore, the child of God does not hesitate, like Noah, to condemn the world, warn the world, shun the world, and reject all its so called wisdom, and philosophy; calling it all foolishness.
All the children of God live in this world, but are not of this world. They are crucified with Christ, crucified to the world; they all live by faith . . . the faith of the Son of God, Who loved us, and gave Himself for us. The testimony of God concerning everyone of God is this: ‘These all . . . were persuaded of (the promises), and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned, But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for He hath prepared for them a city.” – Hebrews 11:13-16
