THE SONG OF THE ASTRONOMER Meditations in the Psalms (Psalm 8)
As in every portion of scripture Christ is the principle subject of it. In the last verse of Psalm 7 David extols the Name of Jesus, âI will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the Name of the Lord Most Highâ, as is so in Matt.1:21, Phil.2:9, Acts 4:12, James 2:7: read these portions of scripture to see His rightful position. Then Psalm 8 starts with âO LORD, our LORD.â How blessed is personal approbation of the Lord as âourâ Lord. If he is the Lord, our Lord, He is the Lord our righteousness. He is the Lord our substance, for He is the Vine and we are the branches. He is the Lord our rock, our head, our hope, our horn, our honor, our light, our life, our peace, our portion, our Passover, our propitiation, our fountain, our freedom, our wisdom, our way, our sun, our shield, our strength, our song, our refuge. If he is our Lord, He is our ALL, all we need and all we desire. âO LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Thy Name in all the earth.â âWe need not wonder at this, for no heart can measure, no tongue can utter, the half of the greatness of Jehovahâ (CHS). âO Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast Thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.â The whole creation is full of His glory and praise, from man the head, to the worm in the earth. In every place and in everything you see Him and His glory (Rom.1:20). Man by his theories may deny his Maker, but he cannot get away from the truth of it. The Almighty God works ever and in everything, and there is not any place where He is not (Ps.139:7-12). Not only in the heavens above and earth below is the Lord seen and honored, but also in the hearts of men (Matt. 21:1-16). Men cannot hush the witness of His babes, âI thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babesâ (Matt.11:25). The âwise and prudentâ have not anything to tell, but âHis babesâ do and they will declare it abroad. âHush Bartimaeus!â âBut he cried the louder.â Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. âWhen I consider YOUR heavensâ (vs.3-4): after 6000 years man has managed to get into the lower realm of the inexhaustible heavens, and he thinks itâs his. âThe work of YOUR fingers,â men with 10 billion hands all working together with one accord, cannot fathom what God put together with His fingers. He tells Abraham, âNow look toward heaven, and count the stars, if you be able to number them. And He said unto him, so shall your seed be.â The Great Maker of heaven and earth not only tells the number of the stars; He calls them by their names. Christ Jesus is the Star of astronomy, altogether lovely. Now notice at the end of this Solar System âWhat is man?â Puny man, pride filled man? In light of the inexhaustible heavens âwhat is manâ (v6)? ~~Terry Worthan, 1938-2022
