No Greater Blessing

“Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

(John 6:28-29)

Our LORD Jesus said, “An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign.” (Matthew 12:39) This was said of those in His day who boasted of knowledge of God and His Word yet would not acknowledge Jesus of Nazareth as the Promised Messiah. Even so today, many continue to look to signs and wonders or something they do, as evidence of God’s blessing but haven’t a clue as to the Christ of Scripture. Their cry is not, “Show me Christ, or I die” but rather, “Show me a miracle and we will believe that you are of God.” Or as many are encouraged to, ‘Expect a miracle today’ they continually look for some external proof of God’s working, (speaking in tongues, physical healing or answered prayer) not realizing that the true blessing of God is that of the work of the LORD Jesus accomplished at the cross whereby God has once and forever put away the sin of His children and there and then justified them by His imputed righteousness, Ephesians 1:1-7. When the LORD Jesus died, so complete was the satisfaction of God’s law and justice that there remained nothing but for God to declare righteous (justify) those for whom Christ had paid their horrible sin debt. How does any sinner know that Christ has paid their sin debt and that they are fully, freely and finally justified before God? When He is pleased to reveal Christ and His finished work in their heart and causes them to see and believe that the work was done already between the Father and the Son when Christ died.

Although it is not as attractive to carnal minds to talk of this mysterious work of the Spirit revealing Christ in the heart as the true work of God [John 3:8] yet to the sinner in whom Christ and His finished work are revealed, nothing could be more precious! [1 Peter 2:7] It is this gift of the Spirit that is truly the evidence of Life Everlasting, John 5:24. To speak in an unknown tongue may create a sense of emotion for some but it is a false experience. Physical healings may serve to attract crowds but sooner or later the flesh will be put in the grave…then what? Many may boast of answered prayers but to whom God has sent leanness to their souls. Yet, to have the mercies of God in Christ revealed in the heart by His Spirit is truly a saving grace. By this act of God’s sovereign mercy, the sinner is delivered from the power of sin, having been delivered from the curse of sin at the cross and therefore delivered from a vain hope in one’s false righteousness. The Spirit of God brings the saved sinner to rest in the righteousness of God accomplished by Christ and imputed to their Spiritual account as ALL their righteousness before God, Romans 10:1-4. Is there any greater blessing than that?
