Empty Seats on the Flight to Heaven

Recently, an article entitled "Empty Seats," aroused my curiosity. The author described being one of only two passengers on a flight from Norfolk, Virginia, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of course I knew where he was going with the article. He went on to say that it should bother us that there are so many empty seats all around us that could be filled, and that we should "do our best to fill up all the seats on flight #JN316."

It is clear that the author believes the salvation of sinners is merely a possibility, that which may or may not take place, dependant upon the will of man. According to him, God has put forth a tremendous effort to make salvation available. In the end, however, there will be many who could have been saved but weren’t, and therefore, to use his words, "many seats will be left empty which may have been filled."

When the Bible speaks of salvation, it does so with certainty. The deliverance of sinners from the wrath to come is not an effort on God’s part that may or may not be successful, depending upon whether the sinner, as the author stated, "decides to get on board the spiritual flight to heaven." What saith the Scriptures? "Thou shalt call His Name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). The Father’s purpose of salvation shall not be frustrated. The Son’s death was not in vain. The Spirit’s call sent forth in omnipotence shall not be ineffectual. Yes, salvation is for the lost and the hell-deserving. I call upon everyone who reads these lines to "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ" for salvation, but, make no mistake about it, saving faith is a gift of grace given by God to those "ordained to eternal life" (Acts 13:48).

God’s everlasting purpose of salvation shall be fulfilled and successful! When that eternal day dawns, all who were bought with the blood of the Substitute and effectually called to faith in the Savior shall be with Him, and like Him, in glory. Unlike the dissatisfied executives of the airline, the Lord shall never be disappointed or unhappy! There is plenty of room in heaven, but there will be no empty seats! Everyone whose names were inscribed in the Lamb’s book of life shall be there and all shall sing "Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb" (Revelation 7:10).
