ARE YOU CHARMED BY THE WORLD’S DELIGHTS Study in Psalms (5:7-12)
“I am resolved to enter the Kingdom, leaving the paths of sin.” The hymn writer writes as if he is settled on the matter, and has decided firmly, as he goes on in the hymn, to follow his Savior. David in like manner is resolved that no matter what the wicked do, “I will come into Thy House.” I’m going to walk with and worship my God. ‘Friends may oppose me, foes may beset me; still will I enter in.’ All on his own? NO, in the multitude of Thy mercies; grace and the power of it are his dependents. “I will come into Thy house, in the multitude of Your mercy; in fear of You I will worship.” I will not stand at a distance and make plans to go in! When our children and grandchildren come to see us they never stand outside deliberating whether or not to come in, they never knock when they come to our door, I don’t expect them to! We are family and are familiar with one another. Should that not be the case of a believer? Coming into the Lord’s house, a much nobler and higher place will cause us to enter with holy reverence. Cause me by Your great love, to come into your house and in reverence worship You.” Lead me, O Lord: lead me as a child is led by its father, as a blind man is led by his friends. The most pleasant and safe walk is a walk with God: Enoch walked with God and was not, for God took him. Noah walked with Him and found refuge when the world had none. Abraham walked with Him and was called His friend. Leaving my sin and strife I am resolved to follow my Savior. Lead me in Your righteousness, not mine, mine is imperfect, Yours perfect. Make Your way straight before my face, for we are walking through enemy territory, we cannot trust ourselves or man, I cannot trust their faithfulness or mine, I am too charmed by the world’s delights (v. 9). Let all those rejoice who put their trust in You Lord; let them ever shout for joy, because you defend them; let those also who love Your Name be joyful in You. There are two characters of the righteous, faith, Let all those who put their trust in Thee rejoice: and love, let them also that love thy name rejoice. Mr. Spurgeon writes, “Joy is the privilege of the believer, when sinners are destroyed our rejoicing shall be full. They laugh first and weep ever after; we weep now, but shall rejoice eternally.” For You O Lord, will bless the righteous. What a wonder of wonders is grace: not by my resolve but only through grace will I be “faithful and true to heed what You say, to do what You will, You are the true one, the just one, the living way, the root and offspring of David and only by Your grace will I enter in, “Blessed are those who do His Word that they may enter through the gates into the city” Rev.22:14. ~~Terry Worthan 1938-2022
