The gospel of God's grace produces upright people who give. Salvation is more than knowing doctrine; it's being transformed into obedience.
First, the person who fears the Lord also delights in his commands; it is a package deal: you never have one without the other. Vs1, "Praise the Lord! Happy are those who fear the Lord, who greatly delight in his commandments." vs1
Fearing the Lord is saying, “I must obey.” God gives grace to this man, who comes to him for grace!
Secondly, we will be blessed. Psalms 112:2, "Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed." No one serves the Lord in vain. No one is less well for serving Christ. We may lose the world, but we gain him!
This is not the wealth and riches of the world, but of the kingdom. Psalms 112:3, "Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever." These are the sweet things of peace with God, power over sin, and joyfulness; it is the ability to serve God and to live for his glory, which is wealth itself.
These things are promised to all who trust Christ, and fear him obediently!
Thirdly, the righteous are compassionate. Psalm 112:4 — “Light shines in the darkness for the upright. He is gracious, compassionate, and righteous.” True righteousness is never hard and uncaring. It knows everyone must work, but it also gives [2 Thess 3:10; 1 John 3:17]. It upholds God’s high standard, but it also stoops to the lowly. Galatians 6:1-2 — “Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted. Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
True Christians don’t always do good, so recognizing our own faults, we see the falls of others as opportunities for grace. We are not self righteous and standoffish, but having the righteousness of faith and a holy soul, we exercise ourselves in godliness and kindness. We are not hard and cold. We are warm, because we obtained mercy.
Let’s never think righteousness is merely staying away from sinners, and being different; it is reaching out in helping hands to the ungodly, the filthy, and the needy.
A good man uses wisdom. Psalms 112:5, "A good man deals graciously and lends; He will guide his affairs with discretion." He guides himself by God’s word, and the mercies he’s received. He lives to honor Christ.
Fourthly, trusting in the Lord is our steadfastness. Psalms 112:6-7, "For the righteous will never be moved; they will be remembered forever. They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord." We know he’s faithful, so we rely on him, and not ourselves, even when things look bleak. Rely on his tender mercies to guide you. Rely on his wisdom.
Enemies will be defeated, and we’ll worship God in peace. Psalms 112:8, "Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes." We’ll overcome sin and death. No danger will destroy us. In everything, God proves faithful.
Fifthly, Paul uses this to talk about giving: The believer gives cheerfully and generously, as God has blessed him. Psalms 112:9, "They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures forever; their horn is exalted in honor." The righteous loves to help others, and to spread the gospel. He lives for Christ, so his money belongs to Jesus.
This is God’s mark in this generation, where exceeding wealth is in the West. People who use their money for God’s glory show evidence that they don’t love the world.
The wicked, however, shall perish in hell. They’ll see the righteous REWARDED, and themselves cast out! Psalms 112:10, "The wicked see it and are angry; they gnash their teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked comes to nothing."
Do not be this kind of person who looks on at the Judgment, and says, “Woe is me! I have lived selfishly. I didn’t not trust the Lord, nor obey him!”
Finally, the righteousness of faith, which justifies the ungodly, comes with a righteous soul that does rightly. This compassionate, generous, and upright person is every child of God!
