God’s Wondrous Works

Job 37:11 Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:
12 And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.
13 He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.
14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
15 Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?
17 How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
18 Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?
19 Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
20 Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.
21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.
22 Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.
24 Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

In verse 14 Elihu states what he claims to want Job to do. The problem is that Elihu gave his own twist to everything he says about God.
It is true that God’s works are wondrous. They are far greater than we can truly fathom. When we consider the works of God’s hands, we should be humbled to think that God cares about man.

Psalm 8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Meditating on the wonders of God is a worthy task for the true child of God. It will help the troubled saint to get his mind in the right place. Job needed to do this for sure. He needed to be encouraged to do this from a right perspective. The lost person can see the greatness of God enough to know that he needs to turn to God in repentance and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour. Then he will be able to see more wondrous works of God in their proper place.
These four men were all claiming that Job was living in defiance of God and that he was being judged and found wanting by this great and true God.
In verse 23 Elihu was also correct in stating that, on this earth, we will never know all there is to know about God. There are things we can know about Him because He has revealed them to us in His Word. God is so much greater than what He has told us in His Word. However, He knows that there is more in His Word than we can ever fully comprehend in this life. For those who are saved, we will know things perfectly when we enter heaven. Until then, we can dwell on His greatness and be reminded of the importance of serving Him faithfully.
Elihu would have been wise to actually meditate on God’s greatness. If he would have walked in the fear of the Lord, he would not have made his false accusations against Job and he would not have distorted Who God is.
God reveals Himself to all of mankind. The danger is when man ignores the facts and chooses to develop a false idea of life. That is what is wrong with the majority of mankind.
It is important for each person to attend a good church that will teach the whole counsel of God. We need to be reminded of His goodness and His greatness. When we turn to Him in repentance and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, we can begin to build a proper theology. We can grow in our appreciation of Him. Those who truly know Him do not want to be deceived by false teachers. They want the truth and they are not content until they find the truth.
Job was looking for truth in his time. He was not getting that from these men. However, God was there and He would begin to speak directly to Job now. God would rebuke Job, but it was in love. It was necessary for Job to understand that he needed to approach God as the Almighty God in a much clearer way than he had been doing. He had no right to suggest that God was not being fair. He needed to be reminded of his finite mind. He needed to understand God’s infinite wisdom and trust Him even when things did not make sense.
We need to do the same today as well. God is far greater than we are. He is working all things for His good. His enemies are not winning. They think they have the answers. They travel to Davos and to other places and they scheme to try to figure out how they can implement their plans in a greater way. They are growing more and more impatient as time moves along. However, God is still in charge. We can trust Him and we can be blessed in learning of Him.
