God commands us to battle the sin in our heart, and overcome it. He gives grace. Let us war confidently, and victoriously. First, it's a heart matter with God. Vs28, "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
It's not what we do with our bodies only. This destroys self righteous pride. It brings us to God as sinners, and keeps us there, relying only on the mercies of Christ. We never graduate to being better than others, which keeps us humble, loving, and thankful. This is God's good work to stain the pride of man, and put our faces in the dust.
Deal with sin honestly, and you'll be holy and happy. He'll grant you the Spirit, and show you the love of Christ. Ephesians 3:19, "to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." We overcome by his goodness.
Don't say, "I'll sin, because I'm saved by grace." Say, "Grace will conquer this too." Then, you'll have the joy and usefulness of obedience!
Secondly, it's more profitable for us to deal with our sin. Matthew 5:29, "If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." Plucking out the offending eye deals with our conscience, and brings us into God's fellowship. We give up the filth of sin for the joy of obedience. We walk with God closer, and there's a reward.
Never mind that others can't see our sin! There's more of God to be enjoyed, as he strengthens our character. It's better than hell for a sinner to turn to Christ. It's also better for a believer to obey, than the guilt, shame, and loss of opportunity that comes with disobedience. Heart sins, when conquered, bring us joy, usefulness, and assurance. We tell others that he's a strengthening God.
Bless his name, and hallelujah. It's so much better to obey, from the heart, and to live his way. We have the riches of the kingdom.
Thirdly, hell is a horrible place. Matthew 5:30, "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell." Jesus warns us to increase our joy. He tells us how it is for our benefit. Noah gets into the ark because of the Flood. Christ doesn't want us perishing, so he yanks us from the fire. He says hell is hot, so don't go there.
Take sin's consequences seriously, so you avoid the trap of Satan. Delight yourself in the Lord, as mandatory. Come back from the brink of destruction. Be saved for your benefit. Fight sin as life and death.
God will be with you in help and assurance. He delights to give grace. He will spare you from this horrible place, but know that you must be spared, and obtain deliverance. Don't fight sin as a secondary option, but as your life itself. Deuteronomy 30:19, "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live."
Finally, overcoming sin is serious, and we're fully equipped. Don't look at your actions only, but look at your heart!
