In John 18:37 Jesus gave this response to Governor Pilateâs interrogation; âTo this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.â In verse 38 Pilate gave a sarcastic response, a shot over the shoulder we might say; âWhat is truth?â Allow me to respond to Pilateâs question: âTruthâ is truth without tolerance, no pluses nor minuses. There are no so called âhighâ doctrines or âlowâ doctrines in the words of Jesus. Every word that He spoke is higher than the heavens. The two ordinances that Jesus gave to His Church (baptism and the Lordâs Supper) are not optional but commands. The scriptural method, means and mode are to be complied to, not ignored nor altered. Huldreich Zwingli, the Swiss reformer and co-laborer with Martin Luther and John Calvin said, âThe institution of Anabaptism is no novelty, but for thirteen hundred years has caused great disturbances in the Church.â The âChurchâ in Zwingliâs mind was the Roman Catholic Church under popery that had dominated the world for those thirteen hundred years and controlled religion as a whole. The âdisturbersâ were the Paulisians, Voldois, Pickards, Albigennses, Hutterians, and many others who would not recognize the pope as the head of the Church, or infant baptism as true baptism. The great difference in our ancient Baptist forefathers and the Baptist of our day is vitalness of truth. They were censured as âdisturbersâ by the received church because they stood firmly and boldly for the whole truth as clearly established in New Testament Holy Writ by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Our modern Baptists have compromised the plain teaching of the scripture so thoroughly that its teachings and practice would not disturb a convention of fleas. On a spring day in May 1527, Michael Sattler, an Anabaptist leader among the Swiss Brethren, was sentenced to death. The sentence read: âMichael Sattler shall be committed to the executioner. The latter shall take him to the square and there first cut out his tongue, and then forge him fast to a wagon and there with glowing iron tongs twice tear pieces from his body, then on the way to the site of execution five times more as above and then burn his body to powder as an arch-heretic.â What was his crime? He refused to recant or compromise his Anabaptism faith. Truth has always disturbed the advocates of false peace. True peace which is in Christ alone, cannot be disturbed. I pray that God, in this religious apostate day, will raise up again many disturbers of man-made religious systems. ~~Terry Worthan, 1938-2022
