"And He said to them, 'Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.' Immediately they left their nets and followed Him." Vs19-20
Jesus promises to make us fishers of men. We'll live to serve others.
People ask, "What do I get for following the Son of God?" You get to be like him. Freedom from sin, with all its horrible consequences, is yours. You get to be like God in love and holiness.
Don't squander your life on this world. Worship and serve God only, and he will give life to you. Matthew 4:10 - Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” He'll reward you abundantly.
First, "follow me." Walk as he walked. Live to serve others. Give God your heart.
This isn't the show of religion. We follow by faith, in the full acceptance of sonship, under the power of the Spirit. We're not following to impress others. This isn't the routine of religion. We are forgiven and blessed, going to God in our needs. We are being like him, learning in the school of discipleship - putting off the old man, becoming the new. Ephesians 4:24, "and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth."
Let this be your passion. Do not be distracted. In everything, he makes us better, for the best reasons.
Secondly, "I will make you." This is God's work. Jesus makes us what we need to be. It's the work of the Holy Spirit.
Come needing him to work on you. Confess your sins, and your coldness of heart. Confess your worldliness - that you don't care about souls. Confess your inability to change yourself, and the idols that YOU CAN'T part with. Bring them all to God's factory of free grace, and let him work on you. He'll drive the demon out for his own glory. He'll set the captive free.
Christianity is not easy. There are idols to deal with, and the old man self is our greatest enemy. We fight the war of faith. God gives us the Holy Spirit, and subdues our nature. He makes us love him. Do not doubt, or be fearful.
Take his yoke upon you. Strive against sin in prayer. Go to the word. Give up the world for the joy of your heart, and authenticity with God. Drink from the living waters.
God will take you as you are. Don't take, "No," for an answer. Luke 11:10, "For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened."
Thirdly, "fishers of men," is what he makes us. The end result is a soul saving machine. A life consecrated to the salvation of others is the high life, and we can have it. Jesus came to give it more abundantly. He didn't come for us to live for ourselves.
In soul saving, we have communion with God. Maintain the fellowship of experienced joy the only way you can, which is getting Christ in, so you can give him out. This life of feasting and sharing is breathing in, and breathing out. It sanctifies everything, and brings God in on our daily lives. The money is for him, so making it is communion. The family is his, so God is in your heart in the home. John 14:23 - Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him." Your life is his, so his presence blesses it. Luke 18:29-30 - And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.”
Finally, O child of God! Fishing for men is YOUR HIGHEST pleasure. God's with you in the work. He'll be nowhere else.
