"“If his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative of his clan, and he will take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites as the LORD commanded Moses.”"
The inheritance can't be lost. It's been given by God himself. No mechanisms of Satan, and no scheming of man, can take away God's promise to his elect. Those who have faith will obtain it all.
Satan will try, but even wicked Balaam will tell the truth of our deliverance. Evil will scheme, and God will chastise, but he'll bring his people out. Worldliness will vex us, but God will not destroy the elect, or take away what Christ has done. His blood earned it, the Father promised it, and the Spirit will accomplish it, beyond a doubt.
Whoever believes WILL BE SAVED from sin, and persevere to the end. The flesh will be subdued by a humbling, chastening, and afflicting God. He'll give us the inheritance, make us willing, and we'll reach the other side.
Let's be rightfully confident in God amidst all that's around us. Let's trust him with sin - not to play with it, but to know that he'll break its power. Nothing will rule us but Christ.
First, "give his inheritance." It's still his. It's not been discarded. The daughters of Zelophehad are right.
Numbers 27:3-7
“Our father died in the wilderness; he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin; and he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.” Moses brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: The daughters of Zelophehad are right in what they are saying; you shall indeed let them possess an inheritance among their father’s brothers and pass the inheritance of their father on to them."
Christ death atoned all sins of everyone who believes. He paid the full price for God's elect, when we were backslidden, and stinking with sin. He saw the falls of Paul and Peter, and he separated us from Judas. No one is lost, not a single one, that he appointed to life. John 17:12 — "While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled." No power can stop him. The painful work was at the cross, but the price is paid in full.
God cannot punish sins twice, nor can he lie, or fail. There's no possibility the storm will be too much!
Secondly, "to the nearest relative." Israel, long ago, gave the inheritance to women. Even though their father died a sinner, the land is in the family forever. They approached Moses, and God said it was theirs. If the man had no daughters, then someone else must get it within the family!
"You shall also say to the Israelites, “If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall pass his inheritance on to his daughter. If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers." vs8-10
How can we lose what God has given? Is salvation dependent on human strength, or God's love? Is it cooperation, or grace?
God has determined to put it in our hearts to keep his commands. Ezekiel 36:27 - "I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances." He gives us the fear of the Lord, and power to obey. He fulfills all conditions on his side, and our own. He saves us to the glory of his name, and works in us to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Put your salvation on God, and you'll have peace. Trust him to do everything, and to give it to you freely. You'll see yourself overcoming by the power of his faithfulness. Satan wants us in unbelief and fear. He wants us striving, rather than relying, because HE KNOWS that we can do nothing. Withstand him to his face.
Thirdly, "he will take possession of it." There'll be no empty seats in heaven. All things are on schedule.
Put away the fear of man. Do not be doubtful because of others. Go about your business of seeking God's elect. They'll surely come. Don't walk based on what can be seen. The unseen is eternal, and Christ is enthroned. He rules the wickedest men on earth, currently. They are not out of his control anymore than when they nailed him to a cross [Acts 2:23]. They fulfilled scripture, meant it for evil, but he meant it for good. No event hinders God's salvation. The elect will obtain it, and the rest are blinded.
We're too man-focused, dear saints. We see God, little. Live above the world by faith in Christ. You can't lose salvation, if you've got it. You can't be enslaved by sin. Tell your Father the precious promises. The land is yours by inheritance. God gave it to you!
Finally, believe, and it will bear fruit. Don't fear assurance!
