“And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”
Cross bearing! Not a pleasant chore but one we must be determined to accomplish if we are to be true disciples of Christ! The cross is an instrument of death. It brings to mind the picture of suffering. To place our sin on the cross to be put to death or rather for us to die to sin is a lifelong commitment to suffering! This fundamental of discipleship is a determination of the will based upon our love and devotion to Christ. It is an act that only the regenerated soul can achieve. Regeneration brings salvation. Salvation brings the baptism, indwelling of the Holy Spirit. He brings a renewed determination and power to achieve what was impossible for us to accomplish on our own. We do not become disciples because we bear our cross, but we will bear our cross and follow after Him when we by faith become His disciples! It’s a given!
(Luke 9:23-24)
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.”
