"Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”
All that we need is for the Lord to be with us. There's no mountain that we can't subdue. We can conquer death and overcome sin. We can be forgiven, and walk in peace. We can love people, even our enemies. We can be transformed entirely.
The work belongs to God, not us. The power is his, and he has plenty. No difficulty, through the resurrection of Christ, is too much. He can send us the Spirit and quicken us with invincible power. We can overcome storms, faults, and temptations. We can stop the mouths of lions, endure hardships, and forsake the world. We can turn sinners to righteousness [Dan 12:3]!
Oh, the power that God gives us is his own. He works in us through faith! He works in others through us! Bless his mighty name. Let up LOOK TO HIM, and believe!
First, Caleb made a great request, "Give me this mountain." He wasn't weak in faith. He wanted great things from our great God. He believed God's great goodness.
Your request may be big, but the blood of Christ is enough, and he hears sinners. How wonderful it is to be in a right relationship with God, asking for obedience, faithfulness, and love. How wonderful it is to challenge the gates of hell - to go into the fortified territory of sin, unbelief, and ignorance… and take over.
Yes, in ourselves, we are nothing. It may take us years to learn this over and over, but it is precisely as nothings that he helps us! Hebrews 11:11, "By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised."
Secondly, know that the obstacle is mighty. "For you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified" God is delighted by the greatness of the enemy: it makes his power known. He hardened the Canaanites for their defeat. Joshua 21:20, "For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, to meet Israel in battle in order that he might utterly destroy them, that they might receive no mercy, but that he might destroy them, just as the Lord had commanded Moses." They could not hear, because they would not. Therefore, he went through them life a fire.
Our enemy is great, but God will save sinners through us. He won't have us trusting our oratory or zeal, however. He'll use us, as we look to him, doing the impossible by his power. He wants us to know utter defeat is for unbelief. He doesn't want us leaning on self at all.
Know that you're helpless, and go forward! Advance in God's strength. Don't take only truth, but also look to the Spirit!
Thirdly, "It may be that the Lord will be with me." Caleb had hope and prayer. He relied on God's word, who had promised. "And I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.” He didn't need anything else. He made NO PEACE TREATY with the enemy! He didn't need governmental intervention, legislation, or his man in the White House! He only needed God, and that's all the church needs now.
We don't need Hebrew and Greek [useful tools but not necessary]. We need the gospel in the Spirit. We don't need degrees on our wall. We need God's power - holiness, faith, and love. Education without revelation is still blindness! Illumination delivers us from false confidence!
Oh, let's go back to being people who need God, who haven't merely formulated doctrine. Let's get in the Spirit and worship. Let's look to God in prayer!
People that need God don't look anywhere else. They take weapons - prayer, Bible study, and obedience - but they say, "It may be that the Lord will be with me," and they look to him.
Finally, saints, God is on our side. Poor sinner, he'll be on your side too through faith in Christ!
