“All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” 1 Peter 1:24-25 Peter quotes Isaiah 40:6-8, essentially expressing what the Lord Jesus said of His own words,
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” Luke 21:33
Yet, Jesus not only said this of the words He had actually spoken during His earthly sojourn, He also said this in reference to all divine Scripture contained in the Law and the Prophets. He told the religious leaders,
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me.” John 5:39
In his letter, Peter testifies of God’s eternal plan through the precious blood of the Lord Jesus, the Lamb of God, ordained “before the foundation of the world” (1 Pet 1:19-20); and afterword, he encourages us by reminding us that this blessed gospel plan is written and preserved in the eternal truth of Scripture. The truth of Scripture, which exalts the eternal Lamb of God, is that upon which we should stand, wherein our faith must be strengthened (Rom 10:17). We cannot trust in our flesh. It may flower in the spring of youth, but, like grass, it withers, and the flower of its glory and strength falls. The psalmist was likewise awakened to this eternal truth:
Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26
Where do we find such majesty and excellence to keep our focus upon God and our desire upon Christ? We find it in the holy writ of Scripture, of course: Long ago, at many times and in many ways,
God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son… Hebrews 1:1-2
For this we should be truly thankful. Unbelievers have asked me over the years, “How can I trust the Bible to be true?” or “How can I be sure the Bible is truly the Word of God?” By God’s grace, my answer has always been this: “If God went through all the drama and trouble to bring about His own incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension into heaven with the promise of coming again in order to save wretches like us, He could surely preserve His message in Scripture so He may be our portion forever.” Hallelujah! What a Savior!
