“I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the desire of the flesh.”
We have a promise from God Almighty Himself, and we must take it to heart. If we walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
First, this is our power over sin. “You will not fulfill the desire of the flesh.” The supernatural power of the Almighty is sufficient. He can keep sin down and transform our lives. He can cause us to pluck out our right eye and cut off our right hand [Matt 5:29-30]. He can give us obedience.
What we can’t do, He can do, because He is God omnipotent with ALL POWER in His hands. There is no lack in Him and no insufficiency. He gives strength to the faint, and those who lean on Him are renewed. Isaiah 40:31, “But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.”
Secondly, don’t think that your sin is too strong. It is not. “You will not fulfill the desire of the flesh.” If He can PUT SIN AWAY by the blood of Christ, then He can subdue it by the Spirit. Romans 8:11, “And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you.” He can say, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk.” He knows that we are helpless, but He never counted upon us in redemption. All is of God, and it is received through faith. Faith sees Christ sufficient to atone for sin, and then it sees the sufficiency of the Spirit to subdue it.
Sin, passion, and lusts are no small things! These are giants that would defeat us utterly, but God is stronger than the strongest, and they are bread for us. Bold Joshua and Caleb said, “If the Lord is pleased with us, He will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and give it to us.” He’ll give us the victory over sin, because He fully accepts us through Christ. Just believe the gospel - not your sin, not your failure, and not your temptations. Do not believe that you can’t fight and win.
Thirdly, this Spirit filled life of obedience is full of peace! Romans 8:6, “For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace.” This is the joy of Christianity - to be controlled by the Spirit. This is the abundant life that He promised; it is not a fairy tale and a lie; it is not merely waiting to go to heaven. Oh no! If we obey now, then we’ll taste and see the Lord is good. He’ll give us the joy of following Him, because He’s a good God. Enter into your inheritance and ENJOY GOD. All of this is for you, freely given by the cross. All of this is the gift of God’s grace.
This is for everyone who believes: the most weak, ignorant, and depraved sinner on earth can have this rich blessing. You may not have friends and family, but you can have God. Psalms 27:10, “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord cares for me.” You may not have health, but God is your inheritance: He is what you get for believing. Enter in. Do not delay or doubt. God’s come to give you Himself! Hallelujah, to the praise of His grace. Hallelujah, to the Lamb.
Finally, if you want to walk in the Spirit, you can. Trust the Lord Jesus for it!
