“For You gave Him authority over all flesh; so He may give eternal life to all You have given Him.”
Here is why the Lord Jesus was given authority over all flesh: So that He might give eternal life to all that the Father has given Him.
First, this irresistible act of grace cannot be stopped. There is no possibility of a single soul given to the Son by the Father perishing. He will draw us by the Holy Spirit, who’s been given to the Church. Jesus paid the debt, and now the elect must go free. This is our hope as we preach the gospel - it is the unconquerableness of grace. Therefore, we do what the Scriptures teach us, so that He can save. We use God’s method of church growth and evangelism. Do not lean on the flesh.
Secondly, eternal life is the gift that He gives us. He resurrects us from the dead by the regeneration of the Spirit. Titus 3:5 He saved us—not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” The gospel washes us new, and we are born again to see and to know God. We have a new heart implanted in us and the spirit of faith. We believe with all our heart, confessing Jesus as Lord [1 Cor 12:3]. Then, having entered the fellowship of the gospel, we keep looking to Christ, learning more and more. He bought the whole inheritance, justified God’s grace, and He communes with us now as a Friend [John 15:15].
Our sins are punished, and our blessings are earned. We enter the good life of living upon God’s riches and power. Sin is no longer a master but a defeated foe, whom we keep subduing. Prayer is sweet, and our heart is full. Believing brings us comfort, until we get to Paradise. We are the blessed of the earth who have all things, like Jacob, no matter what we don’t have in this world [Gen 33:11].
This eternal life is the greatest thing and God’s most precious gift. It costs us repentance and faith, but it cost Him His Son.
Thirdly, preach eternal life. The Lord Jesus is giving it by using people like us! Think about the degradation of your neighbors - how sin overcomes them - and think about those for whom Christ died. They must be liberated, so let us get the message to them.
Do not slow down because they are sinners, but keep going! Don’t let the sinfulness of man stop you. Do you remember where you were, when He found you? Do you remember what you thought about God - how you could please Him in the flesh and human strength? How you trusted in your own righteousness? Do you remember the homosexuality and the pornography… How you lived as if God did not exist, thumbing your nose at His judgment, and willfully resisting His dominion? Do you remember how you didn’t want to hear about Christ, and then He saved you from a life of sin and self-righteousness? Do you remember how SOMEBODY GOT YOU THE GOSPEL? Do the same for your neighbor: Be salt and light. Stick out, and preach Christ.
Finally, with God’s guarantee of eternal life, go out into the world. Tell sinners that they can have it all, because you have it yourself!
