though you men lie among the sheepfolds— the wings of a dove covered with silver, its pinions with shimmering gold.Psalm 68:13
There are certainly mysteries in the eternal realm. Through salvation by our crucified and risen Christ, as we are taken captive by our victorious and ascended King (v18), we enter into spiritual abodes, into a palatial mansion which eludes human description (2 Cor 12:4). Our psalm today depicts a number of splendid and glorious truths, which can hardly be unraveled for our understanding or unfolded for our discernment. Today’s verse is one of them. What does it mean? Did we lay down “among the pots” (KJV) in our fallen condition, only to be found by Christ, to arise in Christ with the wings of a dove covered with the glint of redemption’s silver, its pinions with shimmering gold of divine promises and provision? Surely there are verses in the Bible that speak of the wealth of Christ’s kingdom, yet remain a mystery; what Mr. Spurgeon describes in The Treasury of David as “a hard passage, a nut for the learned to crack.” Although psalms such as this sixty-eighth, penned by David, has many undecipherable verses far above the pay-grade of our finite minds, it ends with an exuberant word: “Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. Awesome is God from His sanctuary; the God of Israel— He is the one who gives power and strength to His people. Blessed be God!” (vv34-35). While often we are but children, even infants, in our comprehension, all power lies in the nail-pierced hand of our majestic Messiah. Our Lord Jesus Christ is awesome as He sits upon the throne of His sanctuary— and He gives to you and me power and strength to trust Him despite our lack of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding; that not one jot or tittle will pass from the Law or the Prophets until He has fulfilled and accomplished all in it (Matt 5:17-18). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Let us ascribe to Christ all pow’r, His glory sits enthron’d; He gives us strength to live each hour To trust through known unkowns.
