I watched a little puppy last Saturday as it playfully ran around our church yard and the thought occurred to me, as a dog is only free to be a dog, so a sinner is only free to be a sinner. You may sooner expect a puppy to cease acting according to its canine character as to expect a sinner to cease acting according to his sinful character. As a dog has no ability to go beyond the bounds of its nature and no desire to do anything contrary to its nature, neither does a sinner. To suppose that a man who is dead in sin could or would, of his own volition, turn his back on self-righteous works and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for everlasting salvation, is to imagine that which is impossible and that which is contrary to a sinner’s ability and desire. "Thy people shall be willing in the day of Thy power" (Psalm 110:3).
