The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. vs37
We must follow Jesus. We cannot follow men. Not even the best of men. We must follow Jesus, no matter who is preaching, and we must reject any sermon that doesn’t lead us to rest and peace. Jesus is the Savior of all who believe.
Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” vs38
What do you really want? Do you want to hear the gospel for earthly treasure, or do you have spiritual needs that must be met? Do you want to honor the Son, love Him, and make Him known, or are you only interested in sinning that grace might abound? Do you want to be comfy with more head knowledge, or do you want to give up all for Christ? If you want Jesus, then you will have Him!
And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” vs38-39
Here’s the gracious invite! If you want to know Him for who He truly is… if you want fellowship and peace with God… then He welcomes you, invites you, and calls you near. This is a great invitation that we must accept.
We must learn His teaching, His person, and His glorious ways - how He saves and walks with His redeemed in the way of holiness, where there is no danger, only perfection in the Savior’s presence [Isa 35:8-10]. We must accept this invite to learn of Him and follow His ways. We must believe unto believing and learning more. Peter said, “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”
As God will not give His glory to another, grow in Him who is God in your character and likeness to Christ, making your calling and election sure through good works.
“One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon,” vs40-41
Find one near to you. Don’t hear the gospel and say, “I’ll go to the mission field.” Hear, and serve where you are, and then you may be called elsewhere. Don’t say, “I’ll preach after seminary,” but begin to testify of Christ.
“He brought him to Jesus.” vs41
Bring them to Jesus, not yourself, your church, or the Reformers. Bring them to Jesus in sound doctrine, and make sure they love Him.
I heard a beautiful sermon this morning, followed by a song that left me in tears. I heard a God who saves sinners, “even me.” The gospel is the most glorious thing, where we’re all LOWLY AND NOTHING, and He is gracious. Let it all be about Jesus - all glory to Him - for sanctifying, redeeming, and saving us. Don’t let it be about man! The Reformers are good, and so are the Puritans, but we are not worshiping preachers in admiration. We are listening for Christ, and wherever He is, we will gladly hearken!
