Bread for the Soul

“For she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD

had visited his people in giving them bread.” (Ruth 1:6)

O the welcome Christ has when the Precious Redeemer visits a soul! O the welcome of your love to Him! You entertain Him with the graces of the Spirit in sweet exercise. So, He visited and He does visit His people in giving them bread. Bread is the staple article of diet for nourishment. It is so in Zion, the Bread of Life; the Bread of Heaven by which He sustains all His people below. When you think of bread as we read in the lesson; "Bread corn is bruised" you will think of your Precious Redeemer ground in the mill in His Passion. "Bread corn is bruised" and roasted you think of His agony; of His dolorous sufferings and so He is to us the Bread of Life and He visits His people in giving them bread. You may come to a place of worship and there may be a magnificent building but there is no Bread of Life for your soul; nothing. When you go by the Spirit and there is just a humble company of people but the table is so wonderfully spread, with Christ the Bread of Life, how blessed you are. He abundantly blesses your provision and satisfies your poor with Bread. To the poor is the Gospel preached. "Eat, O friends, and drink abundantly, O, beloved." Amen.
