“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” vs1
Jesus Christ is God almighty manifested in the flesh, and He is our message. He is the Eternal God, equal with the Father in every way, but He is distinct, though one, because He was with God.
The mystery baffles our brains, but it’s revealed in Scripture, and we must BOW DOWN to Scriptural authority, taking all of our understanding about God from the Book. We are oracles, but only as we speak the Scriptures, and this is our boldness: We are speaking the word of God, and we don’t have to understand it perfectly to explain it clearly. We say what the Scriptures say [1 Pet 4:11].
Jesus is both God and Man in One glorious Person. His humanity came into existence, but His deity is from everlasting. He is the Creator of the world, the Judge, and He is the Savior [Col 1:16]. He is to be regarded as God and worshiped. Heb 1:6, “And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”
The gospel is not about us: it concerns His Son. Rom 1:1-4
Secondly, our job is to bear witness of the Light. vs7
“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light,”
Just like John the Baptizer, we are to bear witness to the Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Son of God. We are not the light. We are not here to talk about ourselves, promote ourselves, or serve ourselves in any way, when we teach the gospel.
Using the gifts that God gave us, we set forth the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, not in the wisdom of words, but by the direct revelation of the Spirit. 1 Cor 2:13, “And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual people.” God speaks to us from the text, and we speak the words that we have been given. Some men use eloquent or deep. Others speak plain, simple, and unadorned. It does not matter. The trumpet must give a clear sound, so that the hearer may prepare for battle, but our articulation of the words and our performance is not the issue in preaching: It is setting forth the Lord Jesus as received from the text [1 Cor 14:8-9]. The Scriptures are to be preached, and all are to be led to Christ - His sufferings and the glorifies that should follow [1 Pet 1:10].
Gospel preaching is not about the preacher, and we want all eyes fixed on Christ. The servant has a reward, because the Spirit is working inside of you: He is the Spirit of pleasure who delivers us from the drudgery of serving ourselves [Song 8:12]. The Spirit WILL BE GIVEN to glorify Christ, but for no other reason, and if we seek to serve ourselves, then we’ll miss the usefulness of our lives and live below our calling [Phil 2:19-23]. The highest men will serve the most from the heart, and the greatest among us will be the servant! Matt 20:27
Do not serve yourselves, oh brothers, but preach Christ from the heart to the people, asking God to give them the text that He’s given you. Don’t be dazzled by your greatness, but ever remind people of Christ in the meekness, gentleness, and love of the Spirit. Preach Christ in word and deed.
