“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me
To bring good news to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to captives
And freedom to prisoners;” vs1
The gospel is for the afflicted. It's for sinners who are broken down and wearied in our sinfulness. It's for those who cannot help themselves, need God's help, and must escape the wrath to come. It's for people who can't do good and have no righteousness of our own. It's for impoverished losers and failures, who've been humbled in our pride. It's for nobodys who deserve nothing. It's for people who ought to be cursed, chastised, and there's nothing that we can do about it!
These are the afflicted, whom Christ came to help. He will surely heal everyone of them, because He came to call sinners to repentance, and these afflicted souls cry out to Him.
Secondly, all who mourn will be comforted.
"To comfort all who mourn, " vs2
This is crying to God through Jesus Christ; it is looking to Him for healing by believing the gospel, and asking God to save you. This is Job putting his hand over his mouth and repenting in dust in ashes. This is saying, "Lord, I have sinned. Have mercy on me. I'm not worthy to be a son, but make me one of your hired servants," and everyone of these will experience the grace of repentance.
He says the Spirit of grace and supplications will be given, and we'll see Him whom we've pierced - how our sins and rebellion nailed the Son of God to the cross, because we despised Him and esteemed Him not [Zech 12:10].
Yet, in faith, we shall mourn for Him to heal us, and He'll hear our cry, even as He said, "Behold, he is praying," and then sent Ananias to Paul [Acts 9:11]. He won't be long delayed by Satan, but He'll rescue you in the perfect hour, when godly sorrow works true repentance. He'll hear the smiting of your breasts, and send help. He'll save you like a drowning man, through faith, though you doubt.
Thirdly, He'll save for His own glory.
“So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified." vs3
He says it's not for our sakes that He does this, but so that He can be praised forever, as the Savior of sinners… so that His name can be spread abroad, and all can know that He's gracious, keeps covenant, and saves the vilest… so that His wisdom can be displayed, His righteousness, and His compassion… so that His sovereign mercy can be set forth, and His love. God saves to glorify God. Eph 1:6, “to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”
Finally, get in on this gospel, poor sinner. It's designed for you. Only forsake your sin, and take a God glorifying salvation for sinners like you.
