Our GOD
“This is our GOD forever, and ever:
he will be our guide even unto death.”
(Psalm 48:14)
When David states ‘our’ GOD, he was not speaking all inclusively of any and everyone who claims to know GOD. No! Rather, he is declaring what distinguishes his GOD and that of others of like Faith, from the ‘gods’ of a profession that so many in the world have and so do not confess THE GOD of the Bible, revealed in the LORD Jesus Christ exclusively.
Here is the declaration of the Faith [Christ Jesus] of every child of GOD that He has chosen in His grace from eternity, for whom He sent His Son into the world to redeem and justify them and that by His Spirit has regenerated and drawn to Christ in this life, Whom to know is Life Eternal, John 17:3. Our GOD is not only the Source, Author and Executor of the salvation of His elect but the One Who keeps those He saves.
This is OUR GOD, Who has done this great work for us. He not only has saved but does save and does yet save every one of His chosen ones. This is best expressed in Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace ye are saved.” The tense of that phrase ‘are saved’ means ‘are being kept saved.’ The GOD of Grace that purposed the salvation of sinners of His choosing from eternity, is the same GOD of Grace that has paid their sin debt and justified them by the death of His Son. It is that same GOD of Grace Who draws to His Son each sinner for whom He paid their horrible sin debt in full. Having drawn them by His Spirit of Grace, He keeps them throughout their lifetime, even unto and through death. No sin or wandering done by one of His own can ever undo His keeping power, John 10:28.
The Scripture calls Him not only OUR GOD but OUR GUIDE. As Guide, He goes before them as the Shepherd of the Sheep to protect them, defend them and conduct through every situation on the path that He has ordained for them through life and beyond. While we have our being, the LORD does not content Himself with having delivered and preserved us once but rather once and again as our Conductor, as the Great Shepherd of the sheep, He exercises the most tender care over us, all the days of our life into eternity. ‘Even unto death,’ may also be translated, ‘even over death,’ or ‘through death and beyond.’
What a joyous HOPE we have as chosen, redeemed, justified sinners! This is OUR GOD forever! The GOD we worship now will guide us till we die and will be our GOD not only while here below but ours beyond the grave.
