When examining the patterns in this person's life you may find things such as idolatry, greed, envy, pride, lack of understanding, covetousness, sensuality, foolishness, evil thoughts, ingratitude, foolishness, desire to look good, fear of man, deceitfulness (See Galatians 5:19-21, Romans 1:29-31, Mark 7:21-23, Galatians 3:1-29, Proverbs 29:25).
Mental Illness
I should really say a lot more about this, but for now, I will just comment that those who insist on owning their "diagnosis" that they have a "mental illness" may often be manifesting the following patterns: Ungodly thoughts, desires, actions, pride, unbelief, a mind set on the flesh, failure to take every thought captive, lack of self-control, without understanding, depraved mind, demon possession, foolishness, irresponsible, laziness, wickedness, defiled mind (Mark 7:21-23, Romans 8;7, 2 Corinthians 10:5, Ecclesiastes 9:3, Daniel 4:1-35, Romans 1:24-32, Mark 5:1-20, Proverbs 26:12-19, 28:1, Titus 1:15).
Disease or sickness
If no organic disease or sickness can be shown to be present, examine the patterns in this person's life and ask whether they have not indulged in the practise of sinful thoughts, walking in the lusts of the flesh and of the mind. They may have refused to deal with a defiled conscience, have a defiled and unbelieving mind, a mind set on earthly things, may be weighed down with the worries of this life, they may have rejected God and His standards, practising instead an ungodly lifestyle, they may lack the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:3, Titus 1:5, Romans 8:6-7, Luke 21:34, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Galatians 5:19-21).
Multiple personalities
Again, much more could be said on this, but in the lives of such people, you will often find: guilty conscience, hearts full of sin, evil thoughts, constructing evil schemes, ignorance of God and His ways of dealing with sin, hurts and problems of life, experiencing hardness of heart, minds calloused against the truth, given over to sensuality, practicing impurity, un-renewed mind, blame-shifting, fear (Ephesians 4:17-24, Mark 7:21-23, Romans 1:30).
Addiction to gambling, drugs, alcohol, sex
Idolatry, sensuality, evil desires, habit patterns formed by practice, impurity, immorality, unbiblical thinking, lovers of pleasure, without understanding, indulging in the deeds of the flesh, self-deception, devotion to a life of pleasing self (Colossians 3:5, Ephesians 5:3-10, Proverbs 5:22-23, Mark 7:21-23, 2 Timothy 1:7, 2 Timothy 3:1-6, Romans 1:29-32, Galatians 5:19-21).
Schizophrenia
Pride, fear, selfishness, ungodly thoughts, foolishness to the extreme (Proverbs 1:22, 3:35, 12:23, 13:16, 14:16, 24, 15:2, 14, 17:10, 12, 16, 21, 18:2, 23:9, 26:12-16, 28:26, Daniel 4:1-36).
