As Solomon the Preacher begins to close the Book of Ecclesiastes, he now directs our hearts towards the last days of our earthly lives and the eternity that awaits each of us: Ecclesiastes 11:7 Every day in which we awake to the warmth and beauty of the sun (of a new day) is to be enjoyed as a gift from God, and another opportunity to learn a little bit more about our God and His eternal plan.
But sadly, to so many lost sinners, life is NOT a gift from God, NOT to be lived to honor God, but each day another opportunity to go a whoring after the world, and to seek the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes, and to be filled with “the pride of life”.
YOUR LIFE, Christian, in this world is a gift from God; that is how you should view EVERY DAY that God gives you! And….no matter what you are faced with in it, (in this life) you must never forget that God is the Architect and Designer of every sunrise/every single day of your life.
Ecclesiastes 3:11-15, 5:18-20
As children of God, we should enjoy every day that God gives us under this sun. Though this world is fallen and full of sin and wickedness, and though there are present distresses and afflictions that every one of us are faced with, KNOW THIS CHILD OF GOD, if the sun has risen upon a new day for you, it is because God is still actively working in your life!
Romans 8:18-31, 12:1-2, Philippians 1:3-6, 2:13
The problem with most fallen humans; they want the blessings of God (WITHOUT GOD)! They want to enjoy God’s goodness while refusing to acknowledge God or to give Him the glory that He deserves!
The world immerses itself in God’s rich blessings every day, they fair sumptuously in the warmth, sweetness, and light of His sun, (and in the life which He has given them), but once again, they give Him no honor for it, neither do they thank God for what He gives them each day.
And in all of their godless enjoyment of the life that God has given them, yet, they heed not His Word, nor do they make preparations for the evil days that approach every one of them. Nor do they prepare their hearts for the eternity and judgment that awaits every one of them.
Ecclesiastes 11:8: “But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; (which approach) for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity”
The most important words of (V8), I think, are the word “REMEMBER the days of darkness; for they be many”: John 3:19-21
Solomon wrote of the foolish and often wasted days of young people, who live their lives thoughtlessly, carelessly, and without any concern for their latter days, (if they make it that far), or more importantly, for eternity the judgment that awaits them. Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:1
Psalm 25:7, 90:12, Proverbs 7:6-8
I believe Solomon’s emphasis here is, there are so many who are rejoicing in this life (immersed in this life) and in their many years under the sun, who rarely or never consider (from the time of their youth) what awaits them at their reckoning before God in eternity, or in the dark and evil days that precede them.
If we God grants us many years in this life, we will no doubt come to the evil days of old age; days in which we will confess, “I have no pleasure in them”!
So as much as you enjoy life, you MUST REMEMBER that life is short; YES, this life is to be rejoiced in, but this life will end, and (for those that are lost), the darkness of the unseen world will be a ceaseless darkness.
Lamentations 3:24-30
Woe unto them that live many years while never considering the welfare of their souls; who rejoice in the light of this sun, “who walk in the sight of their eyes” while never walking in the light of the truth of Son of God or His Word!
They come to dark days, days of affliction, weakness, and sickness, days accompanied with sorrows and pain, days that all of us should be preparing for as the years of our lives advance.
Beloved to come into the days of old age without Christ makes those days, days of darkness. To end a life of many years without Christ is to walk through the valley of the shadow of death with nothing but death and darkness before you.
Luke 6:25: “Woe unto you that are full! Woe unto you that laugh now! For ye shall mourn and weep.” Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:2
When the sun is rising in the springtime of life, YES, enjoy your life under the sun! But remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth, (and in whatever stage of life you’re in) before the evil days come!
NOW, look away from this life under the sun to life everlasting in the Kingdom of God’s Dear Son. Colossians 3:1-2
