The Adornment of Wisdom - Proverbs 4:9

There is no doubt we are a people who are concerned with our appearance. The personal care market, for example, is a greater than $40 billion dollar industry. The apparel market is greater than $1.5 trillion dollar industry. But Solomon is teaching us about an adornment that is far more valuable, because it is useful in this life and the life to come. This adornment cannot be bought, but it can be obtained. This adornment can only be obtained through the pursuit of wisdom.

According to Solomon, wisdom will be an ornament of grace upon our head. The graces that Christ gives are very ornamental to His people. Gill reminds us - justifying grace greatly beautifies and adorns them; it not only covers the nakedness of their souls, and all their spots and imperfections, and through it all their sins are caused to pass from them...Through justification by faith, the people of God are clothed in the perfect righteousness of Christ. But through the Spirit of God, we become Christ's workmanship; where we adorn the beauty of holiness (Psalm 96:9). Every work of grace is a beautiful adornment upon the people of God. This includes faith, hope, love, and humility. etc... They are like rows of jewels, and chains of gold, about the neck. These precious adornments come through in our life and conversation.

Furthermore, Solomon reminds us that Wisdom gives us a crown. This crown is the eternal glory that she bestows. Remember, the children of God are kings and priests (Revelation 1:6) unto our God. Therefore, Wisdom gives us accoutrements that correspond to our dignity. Since the crown she gives is one of glory and honor, this crown will never fade.
