Another reason God brings adversity into our lives is to keep our eye focused on Him. Our faith needs to be solely upon the Lord since He is the only reliable object in which to trust. When we begin to trust any other entity, then God will bring those idols down. Psalm 77 is a great section of scripture to meditate upon. It reminds us that our faith should be placed in the Lord alone. The Psalmist teaches us that difficulties drive us back to the Lord to trust Him.
We need to make sure we understand what it means to trust the Lord. By trusting the Lord, we do not mean bury your head in the sand and hope everything "works out". No, to trust in the Lord means we apply the principles from His Word and apply them. Waiting upon the Lord and trusting the Lord is never passive on our part. By definition, wisdom is the skillful use of God's Word.
It is important that we grasp this principle. We live in a time of modern conveniences that can cause us to become too comfortable in a fallen world. God brings us out of this apparent comfort in order to remind us that He is all we need. He is reminding us that there is a New Heaven and New Earth where righteousness dwells. Do you desire such a place? Also, when God takes away things that bring you comfort or joy, how do you respond? How we respond tells us a lot about ourselves. Consider Job for a moment. If God took everything away from you (like He did to Job), could you still love and adore Him? Is He still your all in all? Wisdom is teaching us that when God intervenes to take something away from us, we need to thank Him. He is getting your attention. He is bringing you to a place where you will stop and look up to Him and Him alone.
