Over the last couple of days, we have been looking at the principle that God loves those He disciplines. Starting today, we will begin to address the question - Why does God discipline His children?
To lead us to Repentance - In Psalm 32, we see that David was brought to a place of repentance. His heavy hand weighs us down, because He knows that we have been careless in our sin. Our foolish/unbelieving friends don't experience God's heavy hand. But God disciplines us in order to get serious with our lives and stop the careless sin. God weighs us down, so that we have no choice but to look up to Him.
And how we respond is important. Refrain from looking up to Him with a complaining spirit. Refrain from accusing God of being unfair. Rather, you are to look up to Him in gratitude. You thank Him for getting your attention. You thank Him for displaying His love toward you. You thank Him that He did not let you continue down the pathway of sin, but is causing you to turn from sin.
If we desire to grow in wisdom, then we need to learn to not only accept God's chastisement but desire it. It is for our own good that God brings us to repentance.
