Wisdom Promotes the Cause of Truth - Proverbs 3:3

Dr. Solomon has a prescription for those who desire to be wise. Today's medicine is truth. The Hebrew word translated truth has the idea of reliability, accuracy, and faithfulness. The problem with lying is that it takes no effort (that is not the case when it comes to telling the truth). Lying is always self-serving rather than advancing the cause of truth. As followers of Christ, we need to recognize that our culture does not promote the cause of truth. Western culture has embraced a "go along to get along" mentality.

We need to be a people of integrity promoting the truth. For example, to speak the truth means that we are accurate with our speech. Therefore, when we bend things to our own advantage, we are not being accurate. We need to resist the temptation to bend the truth in order to make ourselves look good. This virtue of being honest in all our speech and dealings can be pressed into many corners. But consider marriage as an example in being honest. How many marriage vows have been broken in this country alone? When we marry, we commit ourselves before God and witnesses to our spouse by way of a vow. If we are going to be men and women of truth, then we need to be reliable and dependable. And this is how we find true happiness. We sing about this all the time - Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Think about how many within the church have gotten this backward. Many reason that they will find happiness by breaking their vows. No, truthfulness, integrity, and honesty means I will keep my vow. And when I do, I find true joy and happiness.
