Forsaking All
“...whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
(Luke 14:33)
There are many who profess to be followers of Christ based on their supposed good works and decision to follow Him. In this, they have not forsaken all that they have yet claim to be His disciples. The Word of the LORD is plain, however they CANNOT be His disciple.
The LORD Jesus Christ is either ALL in salvation, or He isn’t. Any who think to come to Him by their own supposed ‘free will’ have never come to Him because any who do come to Him in Truth are drawn to Him by the Spirit of Grace alone. When the Spirit of Christ draws a sinner, that sinner will renounce any personal works, zeal or will of their own and have Christ alone as all their Wisdom, Righteousness, Sanctification and Redemption, 1 Corinthians 1:30 .
Coming to Christ, is turning the back on all works of the flesh as having any merit before God. Even more so, considering them all as filthy rags before Him, Isaiah 64:6 .The clearer the view that the Spirit of Grace gives of Christ and His glory, the stronger is that faith in Him and His work of salvation accomplished. His inspired Word is the Foundation of ALL that we think, say or do. We have no view of Christ other than what He has revealed of Himself in His Word. “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed...” (John 8:31)
As disciples of Christ, we know that in this flesh dwells no good thing, Romans 7:18 . We forsake any thought of ‘progressive sanctification,’ as many falsely believe that they are growing more and more in their adherence to Christ and thereby gaining victory over their sin. We forsake all in not putting any confidence in this flesh as improving in any way, Philippians 3:3 . Psalm 119:105 .
We forsake all in not being influenced by the smiles or the frowns of this world or its acquaintances. Being separated out unto Christ, we follow Him alone, whether others of this world, secular or religious, follow Him or not. It is a path that we tread alone as necessary, by God’s Grace, Luke 14:26-27 . This is our cross to bear, should the LORD so purpose and ordain our Path. There cannot be any compromise of His glory in saving and keeping His own. Although painful and grievous to this flesh, yet in Christ, being separated completely unto Him, HE is ALL our consolation, joy and HOPE.
