From the same material one man builds palaces, another hovels; one warehouses, another villas, bricks and mortar are mortar and bricks until the architect makes them something else. Thus it is that, in the same family, in the same circumstances, one man rears a stately edifice, while his brother, vacillating and incompetent, lives forever amid ruins. ~ Thomas Carlyle
Don't blame yourself for the choices others have made with what they have been given. Everyman has freewill to make his or her own decisions about the daily things that ultimately lead to making their character. I know the Calvinist would like to blame God but freewill is a Bible word and doctrine. Here's one verse among about 17 with the word "freewill" itself, Psalm 119:108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.
The reason I bring this out it is easy to take blame for something that isn't your fault. The Bible teaches that each person is responsible for the dicisions they make for themselves. You can't blame things on others like Adam and Eve when they were caught sinning in the garden ( Gen 3). You will be responsible for your own self when you answer to God. Here are some verses for proof. In Romans 14:5 Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. And in 1 Cor 3:8 and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. In 1 Cor 3:10 . But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. Again in Galatians 6:4-5 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own burden.
So according to the Bible we should pray for others and set a good example but when someone you know and love makes bad choices with the freewill they have been given of The Lord, don't sit around all day wondering what you can do to make them have a different character that they have forged with their own choices. You forge your own character not others. Here's one last quote that is old but timeless. Youth today need it bad.
If you think you can temper for yourself into manliness by sitting there over your books ( today this would be ipads, iphones, ps4 and 5's, computers, etc), it is the silliest fancy that ever tempted a young man to his ruin. You can not dream yourself into character. You must hammer and forge yourself one. ~ Froude
We need a generation of Christians willing to take whatever bricks they have and make a choice to serve The Lord with them. He is the Master builder and yielding to Him will forge for you the best character men can have.
