What is wisdom?

If you were to find out that you only had a few months to live, what would you give your life to? Many when confronted with this question come up with a "bucket list". They plan a trip to some exotic place or try to achieve one final goal. We should personalize this question - what would you do if your knew your days were numbered?

First, we need to realize that our days are numbered. Second, the Bible teaches what we should pursue since our days are numbered. Note these words from Psalm 90 - So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. The highest priority for man is to give themselves to the pursuit of wisdom. Is gaining wisdom a top priority for you? Before you answer, consider whether you are willing to forsake all to obtain wisdom?

This sounds foreign to our modern ears; however, the Bible consistently teaches us to pursue after wisdom like one pursues after hidden treasures (Proverbs 2:1-5). Consider our children, many of them do not pursue after wisdom, because we (as parents) have not taught them to put a premium on wisdom. How valuable is wisdom? According to Solomon, wisdom is more valuable than silver, gold or rubies (Proverbs 3:12-18). He further tells us why - length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are the ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retainth her.
