A Challenging Example

In Luke 5:18-20, we read of four men who had a paralytic friend they wanted to bring to Christ. They did not know whether or not Christ would heal their friend, but they did know the only hope their friend had of being healed was Christ. So they brought him to a crowded house where the Lord was preaching. They made several attempts to get through the crowd to the Lord. Verse 18 says, “They sought means to bring him in before Him.” After repeated failures to get through the crowd, they had an idea. They climbed upon the roof of the house where the Lord was preaching, broke up the tiling of the roof and ceiling, and lowered their friend by rope into the midst of the crowd. Verse 20 points out that the Lord saw the faith of the four men. No mention is made of the paralytic’s faith. “When He saw their faith, He said unto Him (the paralytic), “Man, thy sins be forgiven thee.”

These men did not know for sure that the Lord would heal their friend, but they did know for sure that the only hope their friend had was Christ. Therefore, they sought means to get him to Christ. What a sight that must have been when the paralytic was lowered by ropes to the floor, at the feet of Christ! This is a wonderful illustration of what you and I are called upon to do with regard to our family and friends. We are to seek means to bring them to Christ. Before you think, “I can’t bring anybody to Christ”......Hold on! You can bring them to Him in prayer, and you can bring them to the place where He is. Public Worship! “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

We know the only hope our friends and family have is the Gospel of Christ. If we do not seek means to bring them to Christ, I can think of four reasons why.

(1) We don’t really believe what we say we do. We don’t really believe the Gospel of grace is their only hope.
(2) We are fatalistic. We reason, “If they belong to the Lord, He will save them”, and leave it at that.
(3) We are ashamed of the Gospel we say we believe.
(4) We don’t really love them.

When the Lord said, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men,” that was not just for the twelve disciples. It is for all of God’s children. I hope we are challenged by the example of these four men, who did not quit after a few failures to bring this man to Christ.
