The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29
In yesterday’s portion, we read of Jesus Himself expounding Scripture to the disciples while they walked on the road to Emmaus— “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” No doubt, our blessed Lord included the Passover as prophetic truth depicting His eternal and atoning Sacrifice. Today, we read John the Baptist’s testimony of the Messiah’s sacrifice, three-and-a-half years before it must take place. So why did Yehovah God provide a Passover lamb as an ancient picture of the Christ to come? The lamb, without spot or blemish, depicted the sinless perfection of Jesus. The lamb’s blood applied to the door’s lintel and side posts presents the forgiveness of sins through Christ’s shed blood. The lamb roasted in fire foreshadowed the wrath of God Jesus suffered when He hung upon the cross. The lamb’s bones forbidden to be broken express the deity of Christ, who chose the moment of His death and the payment of our sins being fulfilled because Christ’s legs need not be broken to hasten His death. Nothing of the Passover lamb was to remain the next morning, presenting Christ’s burial in the tomb and resurrection three days and nights later. Yet, one of the most striking reasons for the lamb is the Lamb of God as a feast to partake by those who have received the aforementioned blessings by God’s grace. We must partake of Christ, our Lamb. Our spirit’s are nourished in the truth of His atoning sufferings, death and resurrection. His flesh, that is, the incarnation of the Son of God as the Lamb of God, fills our hearts, satisfies our souls, and is very life for the whole of our lives. It is a grace which raptures our entire beings, and is a fellowship we receive from Him, one which we partake of and share with one another. His truth is a grace which allows us to “walk by faith, not by sight.” Christ’s prophetic Word is a truth we can trust, which purifies our hearts so we may, with eyes of faith, see God in Christ. “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!”
