“Nevertheless I can say All is well!” Henry Venn

2 Kings 4:26, “Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.”

All is well, if it is well with your soul.

Henry Venn was born at Barnes in Surrey on this day 2 March 1724. He became an influential evangelical preacher. He witnessed a move of the Spirit in his parish in Huddersfield and became friends with John Newton and William Cowper. George Whitefield said concerning him, “worthy Venn is valiant for the truth, a son of thunder. He labours abundantly, and his ministry has been owned of the Lord to the conversion of sinners. Thanks be to God for such an instrument to strengthen our hands.”

Venn was preaching away from home one day and a man known locally as "Old Abraham", a veteran soldier nearly one hundred years old, heard him. After the sermon the old soldier turned to the one sitting next to him and said, "Ah, neighbour, this is the very truth of the Word of God that I have been seeking for, and never heard it so plain before". "Old Abraham" was spared to live six more years and did so as a glowing Christian.

Venn’s wife died early leaving him with five small children. To Countess Huntingdon he wrote, “Did I not know the Lord to be mine into what a deplorable condition should I have been now cast. I have lost her (his wife) when her industry, and ingenuity and tender love and care of her children were all beginning to be perceived by the two older girls. I have lost her when her soul was as a watered garden, when her mouth was opened to speak for God. Nevertheless I can say All is well! Hallelujah, for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth".

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
"It is well, it is well with my soul."
