âHIS NAME WILL BE CALLED WONDERFULâ Isaiah 9:6
The Hebrew word for wonderful is interpreted âmiracleâ, marvelousâ, and âmiraculousâ. Christ is the miracle of miracles, the marvel of marvels. His name shall be called âMiraculousâ, for he is more than man; he is Godâs highest miracle. âGreat is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh.â It may also mean âseparatedâ or âdistinguishedâ. And Jesus Christ may well be called this; for as Saul was distinguished from all men, being head and shoulders taller than they, so is Christ distinguished above all men. He is anointed with the oil of gladness above His fellows; and in His character and His acts He is infinitely separated from all comparison with any of the sons of men; âThou art fairer than the children of men; grace is poured into thy lips.â He is the chief among ten thousand and altogether lovely. His name shall be called the âSeparated Oneâ, the âdistinguished oneâ, the ânoble oneâ, set apart from the common race of mankind. Truly He is head and shoulders taller than all. Here in Isaiah it intends the Person more so than His name. He will be called âwonderfulâ, becoming the Redeemer of His people in a most miraculous way, beginning with the miracle of conception and virgin birth. The great wonder of it is in the very thought of the True God becoming True Man. What a wonder, the eternal self-existing creator condescending to be born of that which He created! Everything about Him is marvelous and wonderful, from his birth to His death, to His resurrection. Here is a wonder in itself; in the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, John saw a multitude that no man could number, called out of all nations, kindredâs, people, and tongues, and they had washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. I say here is a wonder of wonders, that a multitude without number of guilty wretched sinners should be made righteous by one manâs righteousness: cleansed in one laver from their pollutions, justified by one manâs satisfaction from all their transgression, sprinkled unto pardon and sanctification with the blood of one man, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Do you see yonder? All is peaceful, all serene and quiet. See the myriads of the redeemed, and in these we see our dear sister Pat Hogge, gone to be with her Lord this past Sunday evening. Are they shrieking, crying, and wailing? No; see them! They are gathering, gathering round the throne: that very throne that seems to scatter, as with a hundred hands, death and destruction on the wicked, becomes the sun of light and happiness to all believers. Do you see them coming robed in white; while gathering round Him they veil their faces. Do you hear them cry, âHoly, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, for thou was slain and thou has risen from the dead; worthy art thou to live and reign, when death itself is dead?â Thy name is called Wonderful, All hail! All hail! All hail!
