Welcome to 2021! All the world’s problems ended at the stroke of midnight a week ago, right? Not so much. When the world around us seems so chaotic and unstable, there’s only one place to turn: the unchangeable LORD our God.
Psalm 18:30 says, “This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.”
And we see in Numbers 23:19, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
All the beautiful and wonderous promises we read in Scripture still stand today. God hasn’t changed His mind. These are not dependent on who is in a political office or what earthly laws are passed - God is above all of that. His promises stand in spite of sickness, disease, politics, violence, and chaos. When the world is spinning out of control it’s good for us to remember that “in his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.” Psalm 95:4-5. We have nothing to fear, God is still the same today as He was yesterday, and He’ll be the same tomorrow, too (Hebrews 13:8).
So why does God allow all this craziness to continue? Because He is a loving, patient God! We must remember this and put our worldview in the right perspective. Just as God is patient with us, and He is patient with others, too. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” And Paul writes in 1 Timothy 1:16, “But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost [sinner], Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.”
We are living in a time where the gospel message, and the eternal hope it provides, may be able to reach into souls more than perhaps any other season of our lifetime. Let’s not squander the opportunity! Talk about Jesus, share your testimony, present the gospel message to those who are confused, sick, hurting, scared, and have no hope. Let’s not hide our light under a basket, but shine brightly as beacons, pointing people to Christ, in whom is an eternal refuge and protection from everything our broken world can throw at us.
Brothers and sisters, stay positive and praise our most holy and powerful God, thanking Him for the love, patience, and kindness He has shown each of us!
