Why do people become Jehovah's Witnesses?

WELCOME to the SERMONAUDIO BLOG of BOB FAULKNER

to all who are visiting from my former blog at

"Cries from among us"

We were talking about the Jehovah's Witnesses...

Why they enter…

A friend of mine requested some literature recently [fall of 2016] from a Witness street propagandist. There were some old Awake and Watchtower periodicals available. One story that caught my eye in the WT (from December of 2012), was a testimony entitled, “At last, I found true freedom!” I was drawn to it because I saw on the same page the words “…captured by the North Koreans.” I was hooked. Had to read this one.

So there was this Russian woman, now in her mid-80’s, whose father and brothers were taken away by bandits when she was a child. Her mother sent her to an orphanage. At age 17 she moved to Seoul, Korea and married a Russian man there, during the Japanese occupation of its neighbor.

She was getting along fine there until 1950, when Seoul was taken again, this time by its new neighbor to the north, known today as North Korea. All foreign civilians were arrested. She was forced to live the life of a North Korean for those awful War Years.

After the war, she and her family were permitted to move to the United States. Russian Orthodox by birth, that religion was challenged one day by a knock on the door. Jehovah’s Witnesses spent many hours in her home explaining “The Bible”, which by that time was the New World Translation (in other words, not the Bible.)

She was shocked to hear and then prove to herself that Jesus had brothers and sisters. Little revelations such as these gradually won her over. She was baptized in water after giving away all her icons and worshipping Jehovah alone. She and her daughter became very active with the Witnesses.

So why? Why do people enter the Witnesses? The above story helps us to understand a little.

  1. A Russian in Seoul moves to the West. She lacked family identity.
  2. An immigrant to a new world. She lacked friendships in America.
  3. No other religious group contacted her.
  4. The Witnesses loved her.
  5. The Witnesses gave her a Bible, her very first.
  6. The Witnesses carefully destroyed her faith in Orthodoxy.
  7. The Witnesses then destroyed her faith in the rest of the church.

So many Witnesses are taken in in this way. Lonely hurting people are loved and cared for and “taught” this and that. They are made to feel important and needed and loved. Kind-hearted souls tell them of the evil that is in the world, and especially in the church! The brainwashing begins. It’s a story told over and over.

That’s why they come in. For the most part. Others are absolutely convinced this is the “right” path they have been seeking all their lives:

Like a guy named Chester Harris. “I wanted so much to be right that I became a Jehovah’s Witness.”

Next time: Why they leave!
