Tell me about your salvation! How did God save you? I ask this question because, when I meet those who profess to be Christians; I always want to know how God saved them. How did it happen? How did you hear the gospel of Christ? What was it that you heard from the Word of God that convicted you and convinced you to turn from your sins to Christ in repentance and faith? Very often, I get short answers; answers (in my mind) that are NOT befitting or appropriate in describing God's work, which every time it happens, it is deep and profound. Understand....when God saves a sinner, He completely changes that sinner into a saint! The new birth of a sinner is not a ho hum common thing; it's SUPERNATURAL! The Apostle Paul, in 1 Timothy 1:15 wrote that "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners". When God saves a sinner, that's huge! God has moved! Ezekiel 36:26: "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh"!
And so, Christian, how great is YOUR salvation? If you've professed to be a Christian for some time; shouldn't there be MORE for you to understand and wonder at in the gospel of your salvation? Shouldn't you continue to plumb the depths of the "great love" that God the Father demonstrated in sending His only begotten Son into the world to die for ungodly/undeserving sinners? Don't get me wrong, there is no other sort of sinner than the ungodly and undeserving sort. The best that any and every man or woman can be on his own sight is detestable and abhorrent in the sight of God. Psalm 39:5: "Verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah". When you really understand how bad you were; (how bad you are); how lost you were; how deep and black and wicked your heart was before you were saved; only then will you understand how good God is ~ how vast and deep His love is ~ His grace is ~ and His mercy and compassion ~ YES, HOW GREAT your salvation is! With that in mind, how infinitely profound is this great salvation of which we are partakers? What did God save us from?
First, God saved us from our sins. Not only did the Lord Jesus Christ pay the penalty of our sins and suffer the punishment that we deserve for our sins, but the justice of God was satisfied in the death of Christ for our sins. 2 Corinthians 5:21: "For he hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him". Matthew 1:21: "And she (Mary) shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His Name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins". In Christ, not only are we saved from the penalty and punishment of our sins; we are saved from the dominion and power of our sins. You've heard earthly judges pronouncing multiple death sentences on a killer who was guilty of killing multiple persons; consider Christ, who was condemned and crucified on Golgotha's bloody cross for a world of sinners. How many death sentences would that be? And every one of the sins of God's elect people paid for in intimacy, and in the love of Christ, which was demonstrated toward every one for whom He died!
Second: We are saved from the wrath of Almighty God, which was against us when we were lost, and dead in our trespasses and sins. Romans 5:8-9: "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. MUCH MORE then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him". For those who would be saved from the wrath of God; they must run toward that same God in repentance and faith in Christ. For those who refuse; it is written in John 3:36: "the wrath of God abideth upon them"
Third: We are saved from the god of this world; we are no longer his captives. Satan's primary objective in the world is to keep sinners blind to the gospel; jailed and incarcerated in ignorance and captivity. If any sinner would recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will; they must be freed by a "stronger man than he"; and there is only One stronger than him, and that is Christ! Luke 11:21-22: "When a strong man (Satan) armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he (Christ) shall come upon him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein trusted, and divideth his spoils". There is nothing Satan can do when Christ comes to free and save a captive sinner from his dark dominion! Colossians 1:13-14: "Who (that is, Christ) hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated (or conveyed us) into the Kingdom of His Dear Son. In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins".
Fourth: We are saved from death; oh yes, if you are not in that number of those that will be alive when the Lord returns, you will die. But death cannot keep you Christian; the grave cannot keep you earthed; but you shall rise at the resurrection of the last day! 1 Corinthians 15:50-52: "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. (We are earthy now; but we MUST be made heavenly). Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed". And so, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" Yes, Christian, you die in hope of the resurrection!
Fifth and finally; we are saved from the "second death"; from eternal damnation and the lake of fire. None who have died in their sins have experienced the lake of fire as of yet! But it's only going to get worse for the eternally damned! Revelation 20:12-15: "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to his works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire".
O Christian! What a great salvation which we possess in Christ! We have been saved from our sins, we have been saved from the wrath of Almighty God, we have been saved from the captivity of Satan, we will be saved from death in the resurrection, and we are saved from eternal damnation!
