JEHU

But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin. 2 Kings 10:31

Pronounced in Hebrew, Jehu’s name would sound like yah-hoo. It means “He is Yah” —the shortened name of Yehovah (Psa 68:4). He was commissioned by the LORD to utterly destroy Ahab, Jezebel, and Ahab’s entire household (2 Ki 9:7). He drove his chariot furiously to do so (2 Ki 9:20). Not only was Jehu used to exact God’s judgment upon Ahab and his house, he also slew the prophets of Baal (2 Ki 10:25), demolished Baal’s pillar and house (2 Ki 10:26-27), and wiped out Baal from Israel (2 Ki 10:28). Awesome name. Obedient acts. Nevertheless, his soul remained unsaved; which caused Israel, the people of God, to sin. My mind can’t help to drift to President Trump. He defeated Mrs. Clinton in 2016 like Jehu commanded Jezebel to be thrown down in Jezreel (2 Ki 9:30); he’s accomplished many amazing things in just 3-1/2 years, which benefited the nation as well as Judeo-Christians in the U.S., just as Jehu destroyed the pillars in the house of Baal; moreover, his diplomacy in the Middle East has been unrivaled by any president in my lifetime. Nevertheless, Mr. Trump has not made a confession of faith to the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember, it’s not good deeds that saves us (Eph 2:8-9), but grace that regenerates (Rom 10:10) and leads us to godliness in this present life (Titus 2:11-12). I’m grateful for the president’s accomplishments, and pray that his tenure may continue another four years, however, I also pray for his eternal soul. My real concern is how often I’ve cheered his accomplishments without considering what is most important— the Father’s glory through the exaltation of Jesus Christ. We must endeavor, by God’s grace, to not become pragmatists. Surely, we want to live in a country that affords us the freedom to gather, pray, and worship; yet, more important is that we daily surrender to Christ regardless of our situation or circumstance. A tender heart and prudent mind toward Christ is better than triumphant times and prosperity upon earth. To be a man or woman of God’s Word is better than enjoying the best of times in the world. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psal 119:105).
