Bernard Gilpin and His Broken Leg
Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Bernard Gilpin (1517-1583), was a godly minister who became known as the 'Apostle of the North', for his work in the north of England. When he was seized during the reign of Queen Mary he was brought to London to be tried. The preacher was renowned for quoting Romans 8:28. His guard had heard him use the text on the journey to London. Thereafter Gilpin broke his leg by a fall. The guard mocked the preacher asking him whether he thought his broken leg was a good thing. The preacher replied, "I make no question but it is." And so it turned out because the journey was delayed and before he was able to travel the wicked queen died. Instead of going to the stake he returned to his parish in Houghton to crowds of rejoicing people, who blessed God for his deliverance.
