Man’ Greatest Need

THE Word of God plainly, clearly, and thoroughly teaches that man by nature is contrary and opposed to God in every way. For example, God by nature is infinitely and immutably holy – man by nature is unchangeably and incurably sin; God is light – man by nature is darkness; God is truth – man’s whole life by nature, without God, is a lie; God is infinitely good – man by nature is inherently and unchangeably bad. In a word, man is a natural born enemy of God (Rom. 5:6-11). In fact, the natural man’s mind is enmity against God – not merely at enmity, but enmity itself! (Rom. 8:5-7). Thus men by nature love darkness and deception rather than God’s precious Word (John 3:19). Therefore man’s greatest need is to be reconciled to God.

It is a continual burden on my heart that so many preachers of our day, rather than preaching God as He is to sinners as they are (Sinners in the hands of an angry God), are preaching a god who is palatable, agreeable, suits the taste of fallen, human nature, a god whose chief attribute is love rather than holiness, a god who loves everybody the same, who gave His Son as a sacrifice for the sins of all mankind, a god who is trying to save all men. These preachers, for personal advantage and gain (the good opinion of men, and numbers), are preaching a false god, a false gospel, and thus giving their hearers a false hope. Their disciples have never been brought to bow before the true God as mercy seekers. How could they? They have never heard of the true God of the Bible. How can they ever be reconciled to God? Dear souls, God can only be worshiped by beggars, mercy seekers, before His sovereign throne of glory and grace.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest.” (Matt. 9:38). – Maurice Montgomery

The Covenant Head

WHEN our precious Christ entered into the covenant, it was officially on the part of a covenant people, the living Church of the living God. When He gave forth the promise to bruise the serpent’s head, it was on behalf of His covenant people, His own seed. When He set forth all the types and shadows under the Mosaic economy (time of Moses), it was officially for a covenant people; and although some persons seem to deny this, their denial amounts to nothing but falsehood, for we know from Scripture, that the atonement was to be for all Israel. Moreover, when He is pointed out by the prophets, His coming is on behalf of His covenant people. And when He came into this world, He says, “I came to search for my sheep;” “I know my sheep, and am known of mine.” There is a connection, an official union, a special purpose pointed out in these Scriptures, and many more . . . a design to be accomplished . . . that the election of grace, chosen in the council of peace, distinct from the world, adopted as His family, and registered in the Book of Life; when fallen, and ruined, and lost, enslaved and vile, should be redeemed, should be forgiven, should be saved, and Jesus should be the doer of it. He was the official covenant Head; He engaged to enter into the work, and go through with it, and complete it, WHICH HE DID when tabernacling here below; and consequently, the whole Church, in connection with Himself from everlasting, are identified in all that He did, and all that He suffered as the living Head of His living body, the Church. – Joseph Irons, 1848

Humbled Or Angered – by Thomas Harding

“Rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee” (Proverbs 9:8). Someone has said, "Faithful reproofs, if they don't profit you will provoke you." God's prophet, John the Baptist, faithfully rebuked Herod for taking his brother's wife (Matt. 14:4). Herod's response to the truth of God was anger and murder toward God's prophet. On another occasion, the prophet of God, Nathan, rebuked King David for taking Bathsheba to be his wife and for the murder of Uriah the Hittite, her husband (2Sam. 12:7-14). David, instead of being angry, was humbled and confessed before God that he was a sinner and begged for mercy. David expressed this in Psalm 51, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me”. Now here is the question for us. How do we react to the rebuke of Holy Scripture? Are we humbled and broken hearted? Do we beg God for mercy and forgiveness or do we get angry and upset? Believers are humbled, those who don't believe God are only angered and enraged.
