As a boy, one of my fears was injections. I remember refusing to be vaccinated in elementary school out of fear of needles. As an adult, it’s more of a minor inconvenience considering the health and curative benefits of having one. In fact, a couple of hours from now, as I write this, I am heading for flu and pneumonia twin vaccinations (ouch!).
As the pandemic rages on, the search for a vaccine against Covid-19 is literally a matter of life and death. Now more than ever, the world is longing for someone to finally discover a vaccine that will save thousands, if not millions of lives. The news media flood us daily with updates on what they think is happening with the vaccine. One day it seems that a breakthrough is imminent, and then the next day, it appears so far away. What a wake-up call that the tiniest of creatures could stop the world cold in its tracks.
Our current predicament is a reminder that we are not in complete control of our lives and the world, much as we like to be. In infinite contrast, God created and controls all things. The Bible declares, “You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.” (Nehemiah 9:6).
As we reflect upon our impotence, let us behold the majesty and glory of God. I don’t know when a vaccine will be invented. But I know that this will happen in God’s own time. I know that He is a merciful God who understands our sufferings. The death of the Lord Jesus on the cross assures us that He knew what it means to experience pain and tragedy. More than that, His resurrection guarantees all believers ultimate victory from the sin and brokenness of this world.
I believe that the Almighty God hears our prayers offered in the name of the Lord Jesus. In due time, He will answer our petitions with healing in His wings.
