"Living Wisely" Or Wise Living! Psalm 90:12 Often times we are so preoccupied with our daily lives and responsibilities that we forget those things that are important. Past generations would be astonished at the busyness of our lives today. There was a time with no phones, no electricity in our houses, and the end of ages in our society and existence is moving by fast and very quickly. The devil loves it as he does not want us to focus on the everlasting. How often do you consider eternity? How often do you put all these things in the perspective of the passing? Just how should we live? "Lord, teach us to number our days...."
Why: The word "so" in our text means "THEREFORE." It ties the previous vs. the "transient life." We are mortal and we are all going to die at one time or another. The world understands but run away from death and the talk of it most times...but the psalmist hits it head on and tell us to "teach us to number our days." The Apostle Paul refers to this when he tells us if there is no resurrection life is all vanity. We are interested in being sober and understanding these things. Moses sketches out life for us also. It is very short (compared to the eternal and hardly even worth mentioning.) And besides its brevity, it is in the realm of sinfulness, corruption, decay, and ultimately death which is the direct result of sin. It is the realms of sin and the wrath of God that rests upon such sin. Moses say God's deliverance of His people out of bondage (sin) and leading His people by pillar and cloud...the murmuring of God's people who yearned to go back to sin for leeks and saw that they did not enter Canaan as a direct result of their unbelief. A typical picture of who we are as we are pictured as those who have been delivered. We are surrounded by sin and corruption too and that is our very existence as we too walk to Canaan. Take this into YOUR LIFE and then we can understand and make this our prayer.
How: 1. Teach me to number my days and the reality of life and 2. knowing that may I apply that knowledge to my life and live a christian life and make this my prayer too! This life is very short and heaven? "...When we've been there ten thousand years it will be as if it had just BEGUN....!" Life is like a breath, a vapor, a tale that was told if that is the perspective and IT IS! We need to see the granger perspective God gives to us! Once we understand this life and eternity and have the correct perspective, then we can pray "Lord let us have a wise heart with the application of knowledge and wisdom!" Christ has given us the secret of the Lord and we have been given knowledge and the spectacles of faith. This is something the world is blind to and cannot see. But, God has revealed ALL things to us in Christ! Established a covenant of grace with us, guides and directs us by His Spirit (and Word,) prepared glorious and great things for us in Heaven! Understanding these things we nor need APPLICATION of these things in our life! The point of the Psalm is live HAS a purpose and content rooted in the living God! Not chronology, but a matter of God's counsel and will....His good pleasure! What do we do with that time? How do we use it? What do we do in the life and moments God gives to me? It takes wisdom to apply these things to my life! Not a matter of how old we are, but what we have done and if we have applied the ways of wisdom to our life as we live wisely to God's glory and God's good pleasure in MY LIFE! Not "what's in it for me...." but the glory of GOD!
Blessedness: This will render us blessings beyond compare. We will see sin, pray that the Lord may use us as He gives me a rich measure of His Spirit that we may be a living service to Him, for His glory even amidst my sinfulness. "Let the beauty of the Lord God be upon us and establish the works of our hands."
Do we live wisely? Let's make it personal....do YOU live wisely? Do YOU live to His glory and His good pleasure?.....that is the way it ought to be!
