Genesis 22:1-14: Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee to the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of You can only imagine the overwhelming flood of emotions going through Abraham’s mind; this father, as he was about to take the life of his only son, whom he loved dearly! A son whom he waited so long for! You have to wonder; did Sarah know what God had commanded Abraham to do when he departed with Isaac that morning? God commanded him to go to the land of Moriah and offer his son upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of (saith God); in all probability to that same hill or mountain, which in the NT is called Calvary. There are so many prophetic pictures of God the Father and God the Son in this text; Abraham/Isaac the type or the shadow of God the Father and God the Son, who are the substance or anti-type. The Book of Hebrews reveals to us that in Abraham’s mind, the offering of his son was as good as done: Hebrews 11:17-19 Understand that this offering was between Abraham and Isaac alone; and so, the redemption of our souls was a transaction between the God the Father and God the Son; see Abraham laying the wood upon Isaac, his son to carry up to Moriah; look upon Jesus baring His cross to Calvary; Abraham built the wooden altar and laid his son Isaac upon it; Isaac did not resist, but was silent/obedient to his father’s will; Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not His mouth; Jesus was silent and obedient to His Father’s will!
But here is where the shadow and type of Abraham and Isaac fall short: Genesis 22:10-13 But when Christ was marched up to Calvary, or as it was called Golgotha, after he was laid on that wooden cross, there was no voice heard from heaven commanding the Roman soldiers TO STOP, before driving the nails into His hands and into His feet, But heaven was silent to Jesus’ agony and suffering! God the Father did not intervene to stop the executioners from nailing His only begotten Son (whom He loved) to the cross; and the Father did not stop them from raising Him up on that cross, to hang between heaven and earth, to suffer until He was dead! To die for the sins of the world! The Father did not cry out from heaven and say; LAY NOT THINE HAND UPON MY ONLY BEGOTTEN SON!
But as the truth of Isaiah 53 comes to light, we come to understand that God the Father was anything but silent as His Son was crucified. When Isaiah 53:6 says, the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all; it means that God the Father caused our sins to meet on Him and to be put upon His account; (made His responsibility); the guilt and penalty for all my sins was laid upon Jesus by God the Father. Once our sins were laid upon Jesus, then the Father rushed upon Him in fury like a hostile foe; as He was MADE TO BE SIN FOR US! Justice was done upon the Son of His love in wrath, that we, rebellious sinners, and enemies of God might become children of God’s love! Sons and daughters of God! God ran upon His holy soul in fury and in wrath, which no one mortal will ever know or experience. Isaiah 53:10-12 This is the death which we remember this morning; the most precious of all deaths; for in His death, our sins were atoned, and we have eternal life. The Lord’s Supper is to be celebrated, but it is not to be trifled with or taken lightly.
