He was converted as a young man. One Sunday afternoon, he happened to go to a service in one of the parish churches. He remembered nothing particular about it, not even the sermon. But in the reading of the second Scripture lesson which was read by someone whose name he never knew, he was struck by a verse. The passage was from the second chapter of Ephesians and the verse was the eighth. “By grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” That day he tasted God’s grace and later became a famous preacher.
