…in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge.. Psalm 57:1
No one has ever experienced the “storms of destruction” like our Lord, Jesus Christ. As the perfect Man hanging upon Calvary’s tree, His soul, crushed to powder by the almighty and eternal wrath of God for sins He did not commit, could find mercy and refuge from no one else or nothing else but the plans, purposes, and good pleasure of His heavenly Father. That is to say, Jesus found refuge in the shadow of God’s wings.
The shadow of God’s wings were all the prophecies and commands that pointed to Jesus Christ. Everything from Genesis to Malachi speaks of Christ in some way, shape or form (John 5:39); being a “shadow” of good and heavenly things yet to be fulfilled in, by and through Jesus Christ (Col 2:17; Heb 8:5; 10:1). Until Christ came, God’s wings were the blanket of His grace and the covering of His commands— with fringes along its borders and a cord of blue in each corner (Num 15:38-40), as He is the God who had redeemed Israel from their Egyptian bondage (Num 15:41), bringing them out “oneagles’ wings” (Ex 19:4).
Since Jesus Christ, the Sun of righteousness, has fulfilled the shadows of good, heavenly things “with healing in his wings” (Mal 4:2, KJV), His redeemed saints are comforted in Christ’s wings. Yes, Jesus of Nazareth is the redemptive fulfillment, the empowering strength, and promised inheritance of our lives. No longer in the shadow, but gloriously in the Sun, may we ever and always be in the wings of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
The Lord is our inheritance When He shall come for us; When He comes, we’ll sing and dance, For in Christ alone we trust.
One day we will be glorified And chang’d, no more to sin. Let’s honor Jesus with our lives And give our praise to Him.
